Never been much on sharpening saw blades or knives.Am doing better now on the saw blades and work sharpe really helps me on the knives now. Just busting your chops. I was never any good at it but when you build a log cabin you're forced to learn how to sharpen a saw. I got pretty good at it. Knives can still give me fits.

I asked the same question last year. Im not blaming anyone but myself, but I went with the Honda based on advice I got from another forum. Big Big mistake. It runs like all Honda's, ultra reliable and tough as nails. But it has two major problems. The first is the ride. Its like riding a tank. Literally beats me to death. The next problem is the gearing ratio. It doesnt have a high/low range and 2nd gear is to high on rough trails especially if you are pulling a load. We have a 55-mile trail into our trapline and it defines the word 'rough trail.' On that trail I am in 1st gear the entire way. i've talked to other guys that have the same issue. I would never buy another one because I know there are better ATVs out there.
I found a slightly used Yamaha 450 Kodiak that I bought for my wife. It has power steering, diff lock, as well as high and low range. It is three times the bike as the Honda. Its like riding a caddy in comparison. The diff lock means you get stuck less, and the power steering makes a huge difference. The auto transmission means Im always in the right gear no matter what the trail is like and it really saves on the brakes as it holds you back on the hills really well. Yamaha stopped making the 450 a few years ago but brought it back recently because it was so popular. I wouldnt think twice, get the Yamaha! They make Hondas with power steering, auto transmission and selectable gears. Sounds like your wife's bike had all the bells and whistles, compared to your bare bones Honda.

Yes the Yamaha is a fancier version. The Honda is a 420 and the Yamaha is a 450. Honda doesnt use a belt drive to my knowledge, and an outfitter friend has had nothing but problems with the auto transmission in his fleet of Hondas so I knew I didnt want that. In the same HP range there isnt much difference in price between the Honda and the Yamaha, and the Yamaha rides much smoother. I was worried about the belt drive until I talked to a trapper that has the same 450 I bought. He has 17,000 km on his Kodiak and has never changed the belt. The diff lock is a real plus too.

My 2005 Honda Rancher has towed just about every brand off Higgins lake. Is the Rancher 4x4?

I use my '06 420 rancher to plow snow all winter at home. You can select 2wd or 4wd,and automatic or manual electronic shift. I bought a set of tire chains for plowing but never needed them.

Bought my first Honda 450 foreman, 2001 ,daughter ran it till 2007, 12,000 plus miles on strip mines n doing work with horses. Traded it on 07 rubicon, great bike, ecm went out in 2018, 2000 plus hours over 6000 miles, traded on new rubicon . New unit is great except shifts rougher than others, and to get into reverse is totally retarded, red lever n hit a button. New units are different, just touch 2 buttons, also has no recoil starter. Don’t know if unit would start with dead battery with fuel injection, may be same on other bikes. I still would buy Honda .
My heart belongs to my family. My body belongs to my work. My soul belongs to the woods.
