I'm impressed by how big of gardens you guys are doing, lots of work. Anyone care to share pics?

I just grow raspberries, rhubarb and blueberries, and whatever apples from my four trees I can save from the deer.

Last year’s start. Extended it once for 300 strawberry plants, after pic. Extended it for melons another 50’, but didn’t take pics. Started prepping an additional 30’ for larger melon patch this year. Plus constructing a small greenhouse to get started a little earlier. No fruit trees, but we trade harvests with an orchard. Neighbors and friends purchase all we don’t can or eat. The location was an old pasture, hadn’t been used in 35 years. Had to clear trees, but the top soil is over 12”. You can turn the soil by hand, unbelievably rich.

Im not sure how the guy above takes care of weeds but I found doing rows that are wide apart and mowing between them is the ticket. These used plastic which was pretty easy and worked great. I've moved since this picture and was thinking about doing mulch this year. The trick is to keep weeds away from the plant far enough that you can run the weed eater down through there if you have to. I grow mostly things you can't buy at the store. Great tomato's, good jalapenos, and hot peppers. A can of green beans lasts 5 years on a shelf and stores are full of them.

I kind of liked this newspaper idea too.

I used to plant a huge garden. After all of the expense and work, planting , fighting insects, and critters, I can buy most vegetables at the local farmers market cheaper than I can grow them.

It's a labour of love.....just like firewood, maple syrup and trapping. smile

I’m planning to sell whatever my family doesn’t need at the farmers market, if I can ever get ahold of the market manager to buy a booth and find out what certs I need to get. They don’t seem to like returning messages though. If I can get my seed starting setup going in time I might sell vegetable starts as well. Next year hopefully I’ll have a greenhouse up, planning to start 15,000 landscaping trees next summer to supplement income 3-5 years from now. I’d like to eventually make a full time living from my nursery between seedlings, trees, perennial and annual flowers. Someday.
