I moved here after living in Chicago it was the best move of my life I ever made I have NEVER regretted it, until you have made that move know this heck not only greener but the greenest it has ever been. LOL
My buddy just moved to MO he will never be happier then he is today just a fact, if you stay that is your choice but better is out there. Most folks are anchored to where they don’t want to live be it family or money that holds them back. Very true, Jerry. Not a few have moved even clear across the country to definately better places for them. Better-even amazing, IS out there, if you know exactly what you want or have finally found your goal in happiness . Then it is only a matter of doing it. Many have made changes like this , and yes, never regretting a moment ...matter of fact, if they could have done it years sooner they would have , if it was in view for them earlier. There is no one or anything that dictates where one moves, either north to south, or south to north . Or east to west. Visiting relatives and friends is a flight away, always in contact via computer or video...and it is all gains with new friends wherever you decide to move to. I love the thought, you'll always have the state you move from or spent time in, that will always be yours, and now you are also gaining the state you are moving to. Win win gains . Never waste years in attaining what is felt in one's cells in finally finding what they have wanted so much. For me, what is on a chart is not even applicable in happiness grasped. When the pluses in large and small things add up in mighty ways over the minuses, and the main goal of happiness is in plain sight, that makes it all worth...... every mile.

I'm surprised to see montana in the top 10, go to the grocery store get 2 bags of stuff and it's over $50.00 And closes medical center is 60+ miles away. But good job here for me, but slowly making the trapping regs. Tougher to deal with. But that's just to please the transplants.
Let me sugar coat this

If it wasn't for the politics Illinois would be a great place to live. Southern Il is beautiful, flat lands and hilly timbered lands. Our trapping/hunting laws are fair IMO, and we have some very good lakes to catch all sorts of fish. Along the river bottoms we have some of the best crop fields in the nation. So many good things here, but all wasted.
Like you folks in NY, the big city/cities ruin the entire state. Chi town is a pit of the devil himself. I agree. Our deer camp in Brown county is a sportsman's paradise. Other than the politics and those annoying buffalo gnats it would be a great place to live.

Not sure about food prices in the dakotas but here in Iowa they are very reasonable, the nice part about states like Iowa or the dakotas you can still escape the city and enjoy the quiet but if you want some city life you only have to drive a couple hours usually to be in a larger city, then run for home when you get tried of it. Yes Wally World is a hour away Soo Foo less then 2 hours then I can be back home setting traps before the sunsets with no traffic in sight, it works for me.

Lot of subjectivity in "quality of life" as it can mean many different things to any of us. Fairly heavy weight on access to health care as it is a survey regarding where to retire and also lower costs of living, meaning housing, food, travel, taxes etc. In reality every state would have a niche for any of us depending upon our health, mobility, hobbies and what we determine items that contribute to my quality of life. For me as long as I like the outdoors, seasons, am active and mobile and enjoy rural and semi rural life and have access to public lands that have a vast array of assets and plenty of water, woods, open space and a lot of variety in wildlife.

over the years i've seen scores of lists/charts of best/worst places to retire.
pick one on the top, and before you get your house listed, it has sunk to the bottom.
That said, i hope Snowy makes his move to Minnesota soon. We are waiting for him.

^ MN wouldn't work for me. I would rather move to California South it would be much warmer and wouldn't have winter for 9 months and humidity for 3 months. I'm sure it would be a great place to retire for some but I have been there and it doesn't do much for me. A farmers dream with great producing ground.
I have a good friend that bought a house somewhere by the cities. He has a two kids in that area and wanted to spend time with them off and on. I asked him how that was going. Lol He said, to many people and the traffic is horrible. He said the bugs and humidity in the summer is awful. Have to remember he has lived in the very rural area entire life. I'm sure once you got use to it, it may not be to bad.

Figure out where you’re happy to die at and you found your true happy place on earth. So any place, since I know where I’m going when I do.

My sister and brother in law just moved back from Montana. They said with real estate skyrocketing they way it was, decided to sell and move back. Said with all the out of staters moving in, MT was no longer the same. I have been contemplating the move to MT or WY myself but no that may longer be an option as people are buying houses on line without ever setting foot in them for well over what they are listed for.

20scout >>> that is true. Moving back they are use to that culture/weather etc. and really is home I would guess. Many out of state people come here and buy and last a few years then leave. I'm not sure if they leave MT but they are selling and moving.
