I have a certain length and use quick connects to attach more together if I need them longer to get around tree's, to a trail, down a bank etc.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I have lost a few coon over the years cabled to a tree. I like other options if available. I learned to wire them tight to the tree not just make a loop . With a loop they can climb the tree and get hung up and or pull free. Yes I prefer to stake them if I can.

The key to stop the climbing is pulling it tight around the bottom of the tree before you push it in the ground. Stakes are just added weight. But I have some on stakes for open crossing were there aren't any trees or fence post .

I try to cable to a lone tree so coons can't reach another tree and pull out.

Just get you some 3/32 cable and aluminum ferrels. Make up the cables different lengths. Some trees or fence post may be bigger around. Put a loop in the end. Go around the tree / sapling normally about the size of wrist or forearm . Set the trap and drop it thru the loop and pull it tight up against the sapling. Stick spike in the ground. 30 seconds from setting to finished or less. Caught hundreds of coons this way. The reason for different lengths are size of saplings and not enough cable to allow coon to get a hold to pull from. This^ With an add a link at the trap swivel/ chain end

JBryd, I set my dp’s up the same way. Works great Yea throw 2 dozen in a back pack and your set . Light weight and no hassle of carrying a digging tool hammer stake driver, Ect. Ziplock bag of bait and go.
