I just got a quote on a red fox mount for $675. Is that an average rate? The guy does legit work so I don’t my paying for quality work. How much are the bobcat and coyote mounts going for?

Sounds about right. Our Local Taxidermist charges about $600 on small mammals, but that was 3 years ago.

If it's good quality work, that's more than reasonable. Probably much less than many others.

The whole body mounts are VERY expensive to have done compared with a deer/pronghorn/bear shoulder mount. If you really want to drop some coin have the taxidermist do a bobcat or yote with a squirrel in it's mouth. Just the open mouth added $100 when I had one done 10 years ago.

I worked with a taxidermist and asked why deer mounts were so much. He said ½ the cost is just the form. He told me when it's all done and said he makes $15 dollars an hour. He said alot of people complain about the price and he would ask them how much do you make an hour at your job? That puts it into perspective for people. Some dont look at it as a job.

When you’re getting prices for life size mounts make sure you know if that includes the base or not. Fox alone could be $675 then add $300 for the base.

Yea they charge plenty . Materials (pre covid ) will surprise you how cheap they are. But most taxidermist around here just want to work 2-3 hrs a day and 4-5 days a week. They all out hunting or fishing. I ask why the long wait they say takes time. Yea if you hardly ever in your shop. Heck 3 a week finished is pretty good money. Guy that did my biggest deer said he only does 150 deer each year. Won't take any more when he gets them. That's all he wants to do and he has a budget set up to save some and pay his bills
OK before you guys start Yes I know it's an art but so is tons of "skilled" labor .

There are some taxidermy shops that have a few people working 10 hours a day and 5 hours on Saturday. Still takes a long time to get the mount back. Quality work = very busy

I call BS on that . Look in the mcKenzie book at the form prices. BUT weird angle ones may cost more. But most shoulder mounts aren't that high . NOW if he means HALF his cost that may be so. But in general shoulder mount forms are about 75 bucks.

TRUE THAT! But the average taxidermist isn't that big of an operation.

That ls because most taxidermists aren’t businessmen, they’re young folks that think its a way to support their hunting habit. And they rarely last long before they have to get a real job. A professional taxidermist will most often have a years backlog of full time work. About half the cost is in the materials, not the manikin alone.
Edit: I meant to say thats probably what the taxidermist meant. I don’t want to speak for anyone else, everyone has their own cost structure.

It costs me about $150 to do a shoulder mount on a deer and I charge $625. No way should a taxidermist charge only double what the cost to mount is.
You wouldn’t have any taxidermists anymore.

Everybody that complains about the cost of having a mount done has no clue the work that goes into doing it. The materials aren’t cheap for starters. Yes your form may only cost $75 but it could cost you $40 or more to have it shipped to you. The price of the chemicals to tan and prep the hide aren’t cheap either. The actual fleshing, turning the ears, lips and eyes are delicate work. Sewing up gunshot wounds, fixing problems the hunter caused by general lack of care. If you are tired of paying the high price start doing it yourself. Thats what I did. Then I learned fully hands on why taxidermy is not cheap.
