Thanks Boco.

As for the TV 😆

When fur prices were high I’ve had as many as 70-80 frozen lynx in my fur house at the camp. Once the traps were pulled I would still go out on weekends and hang 10-15 to thaw and skin. Background noise really helps. I like watching movies at night out at the camp too. Plus it’s more than a trapline cabin. It’s my second home.

Yes nice looking work. Looks like you are leaving the full main foot pad. Have never bothered/know how to do that. Toes w/toe pads easy enough but main toe pad would have to think on it. Sort of thing a person can talk about all day and not describe but a few minutes of show and tell would do it.

Speaking of tv's-hardly anyone goes out on the land anymore without a dish tv and a generator to watch hockey.
During the spring goose hunts even the wall tent guys in the middle of nowhere have a dish on a tripod to watch the playoffs.

Looks like you’ll be camp chef before too long with your boy going out with you.

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it!

Thanks for the lesson on wolf feet! I just tried scissors last week on a hide and they sure are handy at shaving down spots like that.

I skin wolf feet and leave the fat part of the main pad on the pelt until the toes are done. Then I shave the main pad off starting from the front of the pad. I’ll skin down until the main foot bones separate into individual toes and cut the bones there. Then I skin those toes individually down to the last knuckle. You need to be careful taking off the smaller toe pads because the skin is thin and you wouldn’t want to mess up close to the end of an otherwise good job. There’s webbing between the toes too so you have to open all that up too. Hopefully I pick up a wolf again soon and I’ll do some better step by step pictures.

There’s a lot of wolves around now but there’s not enough snow for safe “intercepting”. The Mackenzie river has so much rough piled ice that I hope I don’t see wolves on the big river this year. I lost out on two black wolves last weekend on a caribou hunt in the Richardson’s A 5 foot wide by 10 foot deep ditch held me up and by the time I got across the wolves were already getting into the timbered cliffs. Normally that ditch would’ve been filled in with drifting snow and those wolves would’ve been considered easy ones. At least the caribou were there in the thousands. I tried looking for a place to jump the ditch but it wasn’t meant to be I guess

Then my gun broke so what should I replace it with? Looking at a few guns.

-tikka T3x lite
-ruger American ranch
-Browning xbolt

Can’t go without a good 223. Leupold or vortex scope most likely a fixed 4x if I can find one. I’m leaning towards the ranch rifle. Nice compact gun with a picatinny rail. 16.5 inch barrel but seeing that it’s a winter gun and I’ll be carrying it all day the short barrel might be alright.

Should I consider 7.62x39?
No shortage of FMJ ammo for them

That’ll
Last me about 3 weekend trips to the camp.

John marten cabin. Where I grew up hunting caribou and wolves. I didn’t have to camp since the caribou are close to town but I just had to. Ended up staying a day longer than planned due to whiteout conditions.
No definition on the land and so your eyes can’t focus. Take about 2-3 minutes sometimes before your eyes go all googly and you get nauseous.

This small bunch popped out during a short break in the weather. By the time I got dressed and down towards them the weather came back in and they disappeared. My trail was already covered and I couldn’t see the cabin but I know that valley inside out and soon I was back inside the warm cabin.

7.62 wont have the range as flat as the 223,but is a good calibre all round for medium game.Would be good for caribou for 200yds or so.
The fmj ammo is deadly if you're a head shooter. You can get softpoint and HP also.
I like the 7.62 for a bush gun,I never was a long range shooter, always got close to the game.
I have the CZ 527 carbine that I carry a lot.
You may be able to find it in 223/556 also.It handles both cartridges.

Thanks for the foot pic's Ryan and Boco. Had the toes figured out long ago but the main pad not so.

It was caught when I first showed up. He was all
Over the yard and hauled away a bunch of bait I had. Lots of tracks made me think there might be more than one so I moved the rest of my bait and made a good set in case.

3rd one I’ve caught in my camp yard since 2011. Wolverine always use that little shortcut through the willows so it gets a snare every year. First time it’s connected with wolverine

Ryan:

You missed your calling as a taxidermist. Those wolf feet are the prettiest I've seen.
