Hernán Cortés brought the first known horses to the Americas in 1519 and horses need to be shod or at least have their hooves trimmed every 6 weeks or so. Coyotes were already here and I am guessing it wasn't too long b4 some patriot noticed that a butt sniffer loves anything that stinks worse than he does.
I am guessing meat based baits might have began around the same time or not long after that. Your screen shot cropped off some of the writing but it only made sense to me the post was about either horses hooves or the meat itself used to catch wolves or coyotes

To clarify, I zoomed in to highlight the word vechile. Post was from 2007. I thought "vechiles" was a recent thing

The "vechile" was also introduced to the new world by Cortes... it's literal Spanish translation is "Vehicle, spelled incorrectly"... they didn't have spell check in those days and ink and paper were expensive.
Just happy to be here.

You are prolly right there Jeff but I would think a little later on in the settlement of the west.
For at least some time (to my understanding) the only hides worth packin out were beaver, bison, and bear. I don't have any idea when a coyote skin coat became popular but yeah, you nailed it. Once they did the Montana guys fell into a great deal
