I know it's a trapping forum but I also appreciate the very knowledgeable/experienced members on here
I've got a few of those old 310 cadet greener rifles and looking to re barrel one, the gunsmith is suggesting other weird and obsolete calibres which defys the purpose of why I want to re barrel in the first place.
Any suggestions of a common, cheap calibre which won't put too much ft-lbs stress on the action?
Thanks

I've always thought about a 35/30. A simple process from what i have read. Simple process to reform brass from .30 cal to .35. Sarge

you can get brass for it here https://www.rccbrass.com/310-cadet-310-greener/

32-20 would be the least work basically ream your existing chamber should be about all it should take

I bet he also suggested 218 be , 222 rimed 22 hornet , 25-20

the 310 cadet has a .410 rim diameter

some have apparently been converted to 357mag

if you were concerned about pressure 38spl would be very easy on the pressure very plentiful here in the USA not so sure in AU

Excellent advice ^ . The 25-20 is a great little round. I've killed mule deer with one.

Agreed, excellent advice thankyou. -38 SPL are very common over here and was one of my first choices.
In my mind it's just easier to have it pulled apart, unscrew the old barrel and have the new barrel threaded to fit as opposed to re chambering the old one.
25-20 is a very neat little cartridge but honestly never thought of it in .357 mag - that really is a great idea Pete and will also look into the 35/30, thanks very much gentlemen I should've asked here weeks ago.

357 mag in a rifle is a dandy little cartridge. I have killed two whitetail deer with my revolver. Son in law has a 357 in a henry lever action. Nice rifle/cartridge. Almost no recoil but hits hard within its range. He just shoots the same bullets I load for my pistol. I think with a little experimentation we could get a velocity gain by using a slower powder. Have not done that. Its not my rifle and he likes the way it performs now.

The 310 Cadet is one of my favorite rifles. Fun gun to shoot and are super accurate.

32-20 will shoot in the 310 Greener with just the rim modified on the brass or the rim depth on the barrel bumped a little thicker. The 310 greener has a thinner rim than the 32-20.

For cheap gun to shoot, the 310 greener is it (well used to be before all the craziness going on now). Make brass out of 32-20 or buy the 310 cadet brass. I bought the Australian 310 brass and bullet mold. Reloads mine likes the 4227 powder the best. Get the bullet mold for the 310 since its a heeled bullet. There used to be a guy on gunbroker that sold the right cast bullets for the 310 but I don't know if he is still listing them.

how are they about suppressors in AU?

I was talking with a guy who bought one of the marlin 357 lever guns threaded muzzle 16 inch barrel , he put a can on it and now he has a hard time keeping 38spl around the house it is his wife's favorite gun she shoots all sorts of critters that get to close to her garden,

the noise is minimal and pleasant to shoot with heavy bullet target loads

she didn't like to shoot much because of the noise , not hardly any noise and she loves it.

they are very backwards on suppressors in the US it requires being treated like a criminal and 200 dollars extortion money paid to the ATF for a muffler .
