Do you install grommet eyes into the leather for the laces,,or just punch holes in the leather and leave it at that?

i add small square leather to the beaver then punch holes been doing it that way for many years now with no problem if you just punch a hole in the pelt will rip out with beaver and the stomach on them have to pull them tight
