All fur is usually a little damaged by this time of year Please reference your experience with wolves. Obviously you’ve never trapped a February muskrat or beaver or bobcat for that matter.

Gibb. It has been insinuated on another thread that wolves are past prime in February. It would be interesting to hear from yourself and others who actually harvest wolves on this topic.
There's a post today about this on the Fur Handling Forum.

But I bet he has trapped a ton of COYOTES and they are the wolves little brother. And you can have lots of coyotes that are starting to break In late Dec and more so In Jan and Feb. Some of It Is due to genetics and some of It Is caused by the type of country they hunt. I caught a wolf In Canada In early Dec It was pretty badly broke at that time.

It depends on the year. Some years wolves have beautiful fur right into March. Other years they rub earlier-in feb. Years with low snow will get them rubbing earlier here. Chewing lice causes wolves to rub at any time, including fall. Jim is harvesting wolves on his line primarily for line management, not for fur, although he will no doubt market the good ones. Harvesting wolves each year on your line and keeping them at minimal harvesable numbers is of prime importance to keeping your valuable furbearers at maximum sustainable numbers and keeping your line healthy.Eliminating them is counterproductive and will hurt your line. Trappers who maintain substantial beaver(and other fur) quotas year to year always are good wolf men.

That's a nice informative video on snaring in general.
Thanks gibb.

This is my first year trapping wolves but I caught one yesterday and it was definitely starting to look a little ratty.

Beav ur old school. U know thinking productive trapping ends at thanksgiving. Comparing Iowa coyotes to wolves is like comparing October rats to February rats. Not really Nimzy. You are trying to compare rats to long haired critters and that Isn't any comparison. My buddy quite trapping Kansas coyotes about a month ago because he was only skinning half of what he caught because they were starting to break. So lets look at WI coyotes compared to WI wolves. The last coyotes I caught were In late Jan. 5 out of the 20 were hardly worth skinning. My buddy just quit on Monday and out of his last 10 coyotes caught at the end of Jan and Into Feb he only brought 4 home. So is that a better comparison. But of course we haven't seen any wolves yet. So we will have to wait and see.
