DOWNERS GROVE, IL (WKOW) -- The Illinois Tollway announced Thursday tolls will no longer be accepting cash.

The agency will now only be accepting I-Pass, E-ZPass, or online payments. Paying by check or money order is an option for those who can't pay online.

The decision was made almost a year after the tollway stopped taking cash due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tollway is planning in May to launch a program for low-income drivers that will waive deposits on I-PASS transponders and add $20 in tolls to people with household incomes up to 2 1/2 times the poverty line.

Illinois Tollway reports that more than 92 percent of toll transactions were via I-PASS and E-ZPass in 2019.

Nope, you're responsible for paying.

They will mail you a citation and fine.

What a joke that toll system is. I lived there for 5 years when I went to tech school and met my wife. Before I got illinois plates, I just ran every single toll station I came across. I never once got a bill or a ticket.
I say just blow through em and if they send you a bill then pay it.

The I65 bridge and 265 bridge across the Ohio river don't take cash. You get a transponder that's connected to your bank or they send couple dollar higher bill in the mail. They take picture of your license plate if you don't have an account. $4 to cross in a passenger vehicle if you don't have an account. $8 round trip 40 a week for people driving to work is expensive.

I may or may not have found a way that avoids the toll. Tried it one trip never got a bill.

If there is no way to pay the toll if you only have cash they must take a picture of your license plate and send you the bill.

It's just another way for the government to keep track of where the populace is and is going.

What's a "tollway"?

How would they force a guy from out of state to pay?

I've ran a pile of them, never got a bill. Maybe they don't enforce it if you have out of state plates?

The bridges I cross are in ky and I live in Indiana. They send you a bill if you don't pay my license will be revoked.

The State of Indiana will revoke your license if you don't pay a toll to the State of Kentucky?

Suspend is what they said. I haven't tested it though. Well other than my 1 round trip experiment.

I think they have some special agreement. Heck 18 wheelers are $18 or more per crossing or maybe 24. I can't remember what the sign says. Its interstate so gets a lot of out of state people.

I don't know the details on how they enforce collection in other states. I do know I got the bill.

Coming back from vacation last year on the NC coast I kept seeing signs that said toll road but never came up on any toll booths like the ones on I77, well about a month after we got back I received a bill from the state of NC along with pics of my vehicle and license plate. They just have cameras set up that take pics and then they send bill to you

That's what Denver does on certain toll roads.

Never knew about it the first time in 20+ years using a toll road last year. Sat there waiting for someone to hand me a ticket. People behind me didn't like that.
They also do this for speeding, at least the one I got. grin

That will get you pulled over and in more trouble better to not run a plate at all.
