They call them "Rib eye of the sky" for good reason they are delicious. Largest group I ever saw was in the panhandle of Tx around Pampa. Texas also allows hunting.

You guys that hunt them, just how do you get them down? We have big flocks of them passing overhead now in Georgia but they are way up there. Most of the time you hear them, do they ever shut up, but have to really search to see them way up there. I figure it would take a missile of some sort to reach them as my guess is they are several hundred yards up. A few times I have seen them on the ground in some random cow pasture but never in the same spot twice. I figure they must have to stop to eat but evidently any odd spot will do. No idea how y'all pattern these things.

Years ago, when I was trapping in Wy, the sky was full of flocks headed south ahead of the fronts. Up there, I never saw them on the ground. Back in those days, they were putting whooping crane eggs in SC nests to hatch them, and seen a few whoopers migrating with the SC. They were always looking for a rising air current, and would ride that air current higher and. higher, then take off south again. It is amazing how they are programed by nature, the way they navigate, day or night!

Nope.

I saw a few hundred flying south last November while I was deer hunting. I don't think I have ever saw a bird fly as high as they were. No problem hearing them though, very noisy.
