Hello all. Long time lurker, short time poster.

My wife and I have been looking for a good farm/hunting/trapping/family dog. My dad used to have a good little Mountain Cur, but I'd just like something a little larger, and "protective". We have a three year old daughter, so just trying to find an all around dog for all of us has been a challenge. I want a hunting buddy( squirrel dog mainly), my wife wants something cuddly, and we both want something that would be protective/alert for our daughter.

Do any of you have a blackmouth cur, or have experience? Any thoughts on them, or experiences, good or bad? Advice is definitely appreciated, as they look good "on paper" for what we want, but I know that's not always the case when the rubber hits the road.
Thanks,
Rick

I can't imagine a dog more protective than my mountain cur. Not sure if it's just him, the breed in general, or male curs. We socialized the heck out of him when he was a puppy, but about 8 months old, he got real protective, especially of me.

A friend's kids have a blackmouth on their farm, it does everything you are looking for. Hard to have visitors over though.

My buddy has a black mouth cur. LOTS of energy!! But is very sociable !! I have never seen any indication that she would be protective at all. She's a sweetie ! Loves to hunt but is very headstrong !. Required an electronic collar to train her.

That it does. Mine is very protective at home.

He is fine when somewhere else (hiking, hunting, just out and about).

Thank you all for the replies. I don't really need "protective" but an alert dog is definitely nice. I might take another look at the Mountain Cur, I remember my Dads was a great dog, wasn't sure if a Blackmouth would have the same personality just taller, or if it's a different breed altogether so to speak. Thank you again!

There's a few different lines of blackmouth. The to main are the tree dogs as typified by the Ladner line and the stock/catch dogs as typified by the Howard and Parton lines.
The treeing lines tend to be smaller and more hound like while the stock lines has the size and temperament to handle woods cattle or hogs.

I have a Ladner cur they are very intelligent. They are very protective but only when need be. Somehow they they no if someone is up to know good. Ours protect my wife from the chickens and calves even though there not aggressive. She can tell the wife is un easy around them. I use her for trapping coon hunting squirrel hunting and decoying coyotes.

They are great for cows and hogs, fair for coon and small game. They are very good farm/family dogs and a nice looking dog. Like any dog or hound the breeder plays a big roll.

I am picking up 2 catahoula pups I put a deposit down on last Saturday, this Saturday. A catahoula sounds like it would be close to what you're looking for. The pups are in West Milton, Ohio. They had 8 more available. They'll be 8 weeks old March 9th.

We have Cane Corso's and they are the same way. Very protective in the house but around town they are total love bugs.

I have a mountain cur. Excellent watch dog with a nice deep menacing bark but no bite to its bark. I also like black mouth curs, very attractive dogs.

I’d like to find a Ladner BMC pup from someone that hunts their dogs and has proven tree dog lines. I have a my name on a waiting list for a mountain cur pup from a fellow in Wyoming that has proven lion and bobcat dogs but the wait is about a year for a pup. Good pups are hard to find
