National and state trapping associations. Look at what's happened in New Mexico. Possibly Oregon soon. I myself am a member of 7 state trapping associations as well as the NTA. Small price to pay for supporting our fellow trappers. Even those of us in states with constitutional trapping rights. The biggest thing we can do is stick together as trappers and outdoorsmen. The anti's have a lot more money than us trappers and our associations. Support is key, in my opinion.

Maybe it would better to post an example of where an organization prevented a ban, not one where they failed to prevent one?

We almost lost the entire fur trade here a few years ago but was never really covered. The NTA through Tom Krause stopped it. The Montana issue back in 16. There's a lot of things that happen behind the scenes that never get talked about

Tell us more.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

If you don't feel like a state or national organization spends your money wisely, you have options. Get involved and become part of the leadership so you can make the spending decisions. Or spend your money in ways that you feel have a more direct impact on saving trapping. In my state, we hired a lobbyist. Not just "A" lobbyist, the best lobbyist. Best money we ever spent. He often solves problems before they grow legs and become major issues. He understands what motivates legislators and policy makers. Our legislators meet every two years (what a blessing that its ONLY every two years). And each session, there is a bill to either end trapping or cripple it. And every session the naysayers among us almost accept defeat, and every session this guy somehow manages to pull a rabbit out of the hat and heads off the bad legislation. Fingers crossed he never dies and never quits.

I wonder how many state trapping organizations sent out a notice to their members on what is happening in New Mexico and requesting their members to support the New Mexico trappers. Or was it this isn’t happening to us so why should we care. I also belong to several organizations and I didn’t here one peep from some of them.

Unfortunately not all of em have rapid response capabilities. And you can't trust the mail these days to get things done timely.

Wouldn't be hard to collect a list of e-mail address for their members. I think it would be pretty easy to set up e-mail reminders when memberships are about to expire as well.

In NC, we send out a monthly email newsletter not only to our members who provide us an email address but to anyone who provides us an email address. There is always a section about Anti Trapping Activity. We do not buy or sell email addresses. There is an Archive of past newsletters on our website if anyone is interested reading them that includes how to get on the distribution list.

We have used this method of notification to get rapid response when we had issues that needed to be addressed come up in our state legislature and it has made a difference.

We use constant contact for our enews but not everyone has signed up, though not everyone is on the computer, even those that aren't non-english. It's a voluntary sign up as it's part of our policy to not distribute our membership list.

I guess there is nothing that can be done then. No way to improve upon what's being done at all.

There's more to be done, we just need to find the magic button that gets more participation. We actually get good open rates on our emails compared to others
