That guy knows how to sharpen an ax. However, on a tree the size that he fell, why didn't he use a saw on the back-cut? Without using a saw and wedge there is really no way to control the direction of the fall unless the tree just naturally wants to go that way due to lean or weight distribution.
Saws have been used for such work for at least a couple of centuries.

From days gone by , many have lost these skills with the advent of easier , more powerful methods with power tools. Good to learn the old skills though. Kinda knew most of it , but a great refresher. I did learn some new tips from it however and added to my skillset.

I carry a single bit Michigan it is a tool of many purposes , lay out , testing for hollow stumps , clean out and driving wedges

it is short handled to about 27 inches

I like my 72 cc saw for felling , better sights and good power and large double felling dogs

I was thinking of adding a full wrap handle but tried one on a friends saw and decided I was ok with the factory handle

Yeah, I get it. I guess if the only tool you have is an ax, then that's what you use to get the tree on the ground. My point was, an ax along with a saw is a much safer way to accomplish the task.
The guy does have some skills though. Most people nowadays don't appreciate what you can do with a sharp tool, and fewer yet don't know how to sharpen a tool so it works as intended.
