I would ask the hospital doing the procedure.

Almost always the other person's insurance covers it

I’ve got an acquaintance I can put you in touch with that has a Donated kidney. He’d be happy to tell you all about it.

They won't take yours if diabetes, too obese, hypertension, too many kidney stones, too many urinary infections. You'll be tested up and down for all kinds of diseases and infections. Blood, urine, scans.

Make sure you have a lot of sick time. I went back to work at 3 weeks. Should have taken more (and I have an office job). The surgery isn't easy, but there are worse ones.

Get life insurance BEFORE you donate. After, it is much more expensive and some companies won't underwrite you in spite of data showing that length of life is similar.

my friend had a heck of a time finding a matching donor. He went through an organizaiton that matches people up across the country in a trade sort of. You'll donate for your sister even if it doesn't match. They'll find a donor for your sister and you 'll donate your kidney to someone that you match up with is how it worked for him to the best of my memory. He now has a list of foods he can't eat and is a high risk patient so COVID is a very scary thing for him as is the typical flu. He goes mia during flu season unless ECU has a home football game.
