I was looking for some cheap plywood to close an opening I made in the exterior of a customers house. I removed a door and sidelight and can't permanently close it until I get a framing inspection. I usually get 3/8" CDX which not that long ago was about $11.00 a sheet. It was $47-somthing.

I ended up getting two sheets of 5mm luaun. at $14.00 a piece.

Eh...wot?

I was talking to a good friend of mine from church on Sunday that works as a supply manager for a large builder supply wholesaler. I asked him why the prices on lumber were so high. He told me it was due to a "perfect storm" of events that happened in the past year. One was major structural damage to one of the 3 plants in the world that produces resin used for making OSB. The plant has been down for several months and has put OSB production way behind. Another big thing was tariffs on Canadian lumber that have caused the prices to go up. The other major issue he mentioned was that a mill in Louisiana that supplies about 60% of the domestic treated lumber had a big fire that has put production down for quite a while.

All of this coupled with a surge in new construction over the past few months in some fast growing areas have really driven prices up. I told him I needed to replace my back deck and he told me to wait until next year based on what they are seeing.

I have 400 mature red pines ready to cut. Plus I have the tractors, loaders, skidder to do the job right. I am thinning, planting other trees, and will do more each year.
Someone with a sawmill let’s make a deal!

Contact a pole company, they will mark the pole tree for you. You will get more $$ for poles then straight lumber.

The papermills have a lot of 3/4 inch plywood that they discard from time to time.
It is round and 4 foot diameter,I guess they use it for spooling the paper rolls that they ship out. There is no hole in the middle though-maybe its used for stacking or something.
My young neighbor works at the mill and drops off as much as I want for making beaver boards and marten boxes.I have used it for flooring at camps etc.The trimmings make good firewood.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
