Going to chasing some elusive morels this weekend. Have had good luck in the past looking in "typical morel areas" what ever that means. My question is have you ever found them in burned prairie? I know they do well after prescribed burns in areas that have woody material, but can they grow in the vast expanse of prairie that was recently burned. Any tips would be great if i should try these areas or stick to the tried and true locations.

Much Thanks!

I've never found them far from the timber. I think I'd stick to the types of places that have been good in the past!

We don't have any prairie here so can't say much for that. I can say Ive found them growing out of gravel roads and rock piles so I'd say if the conditions are right and the fungus is present you'll find them just about any where. It's been a ruff year here so far. Lot of rain in the forecast next two weeks though. Only found a 100 or so this year but the ones I have found were good and big. Hopefully the next week or so will be a little better.

Thanks guys. I hear of people finding them in burns all the time, but i'm guessing thats more forest burns than wide open prairie. The pup is going to run where he wants so we'll follow him and see if we find anything cool.

I don't have much luck in open spaces that tend to get all day sun but it may be different in your area. Around here in east tennessee it seems like they definitely like the more wooded areas. It's not been a great season here, but the weather has gotten better the past few days and I was fortunate to find a couple hundred this weekend. It's about over here in east tennessee. Do you have sycamore trees along the rivers and streams out your way? If so check them out. I'd never heard that until a couple years ago and now 50% of mine come from sycamore trees along the river
