One of my favorites. I was able to get ahold of the 92 DVD the theatrical version. Most DVD’s sold in US are director’s cut, which has a few corny scenes in it. I will have to watch the old version, thanks for the heads up.

I have read the books in the series, but have only viewed the 1992 movie. The movie was very good and the sound track is awesome.
Bryce I have also read all five books in the series. Cooper was a great author. The 1992 movie is one of my all time favorites. Dougie MacLean's "The Gael" is a great classic.

My regret with the movie is I never saw it on the big screen.I remember listening to Rush Limbaughs radio show at the time the movie was on the big screen and he said don't wait until this comes out on tape, you'll never get the same effect as you will watching it on the big screen.I didn't go to the theaters, but after it was out on tape I bought it and loved it.The scenery was fantastic, and the fight scene when the British marched out of the fort and were ambushed by the Indians is one of the best battle scenes ever. And I'll bet it was awesome seeing it at the theater.

I especially liked that part where the British marched out of the fort and got attacked by the Indians too. I also liked the part where he was shooting the Indians from on top of the fort wall that were trying to intercept the couriers that were sent out from the fort for reinforcements. The music was awesome too!

The Indian ambush on the British surrender is based on fact,as is many other scenes in this movie. The book " Bloody Mohawk" by Richard Berleth described the incident, the French had promised the British soldiers too sick to be moved in the infirmary would be taken care of.As soon as the British pulled out the Indians, who were unhappy they didn't get any trophies, went on a rampage, taking tomahawk and knives to the wounded. Then when they finished with them they dug up the corpses in the cemetery and scalped them and stripped their clothes off. Many of the corpses had died of small pox,so later when the warriors brought their clothes back to the villages small pox spread like wild fire.Sorry to carry on,but I find the eastern Indian wars fascinating.Would love to take a trip sometime to upper New York/Lake George area where many of the incidents actually took place.

The author James Fenimore Cooper got the idea for Natty Bumpo aka leatherstocking, La Long carbine, in his books Pathfinder, Deerslayer, Last Of the Mohicans, etc. from the real life Adirondack Trapper Nathaniel (Nat) Foster. 1767 - 1840. I am a direct descendant of his. His granddaughter was my great grandmothers, grandmother. It makes me his great, great, great, great, great grandson. He ran a trapline from the Mohawk Valley near Salisbury, NY all the way through the ADKs to the St Lawrence River. There is a book about his life, titled, The Life and Adventures of Nat Foster, by Byron Curtiss.

Yes, but given the political correct era we live in now, he is not mentioned much now in Adirondack history. In 1835, When he was 65, he allegedly shot and killed a 25 year old St Regis/Mohawk Indian thug, who threatened his life and others , in front of witnesses on many occasions. Near what is today Old Forge, NY. Foster tried repeatedly to get a order of protection from local Justices, but they refused because they feared the Indian would come after them. Anyway he was tried for murder but found not guilty, because there was reasonable doubt, given the fact it happened in the ADK wilderness. The trial transcript can be found in the book, Trappers of NY, by Jeptha R. Simms
