Yes fuel pump pump gas no matter what gauge say will pump as long as there is gas to pump. your gas gauge could be going bad or maybe you were on a hill and the level didn't level out fast and needed time to settle back to get accurate reading.

Just think , if you didn't have to pay for the new street and broken water/sewer lines you could buy a New truck .

Just carry 5 gallons of gas with you and watch your mileage so you know how far to go on a tank. Don’t let the gas in the tank run real low as that what cools your fuel pump, it will burn up your pump if you let it stay low all the time.

You won't burn a pump up unless you constantly run OUT of gas

This is correct, most common cause of fuel gauge issues is a broken or damaged ground. I always start by checking the ground on all vehicle electric problems
