I was headed to a pizza joint at lunch time. As I was leaving I saw a coon by my neighbors trash can. Just standing there unafraid. I got out and it still acted unafraid. Eyes were clear and it wasnt skinny. I thought it looked like it wanted to fight. I shot it. (neighbor came out and thanked me. she has some young hens) She went in and got me a trash bag and I got it in without touching it. I hope it wasnt rabies.

distemper will make them stupid also. got one at campus, 10.00 am class change, standing in the middle of the sidewalk watching everyone walking by! grabbed a trashcan, shooed it into it it and put the lid on. it went for a ride to the dump. silly kids where trying to feed it, pet it and play with it!

I think distemper makes their eyes run and mat up

Crusty eyes or matted shut is feline last stage. I'm not sure if canine is the same. Usually the ones I've seen with matted eyes are also very thin and weak.

I've seen some awfully thin coon out during the day and put them down assuming they had distemper and I don't remember noticing any discharge in the eyes. It could be I wasn't lookin for it I guess b/c I was focused on getting them in an old feed back and onto the next brush pile fire PDQ

Was it a nursing female? This time of year she would have a litter of 6 to 8 week old pups. Those pups will suck her dry and a female will sometimes be out in daytime for water and/or a little food to keep up with her litter's demands.

I didnt look for a penis but was no teats . I did see that. It was sick. Not hungry or thirsty. I was 15 feet away when I shot it and it just stood its ground looking at me. A thirsty/hungry sow would have ran.

If it was clear eyed and healthy and not skinny it probably was not sick, or if it was it was early in the course of the illness.

Rabid coons I have seen stagger around like a drunk. Clear, almost opened extra wide eyes, sometimes drooling. Only a percentage of them get into what is called the mad stage where they attack other animals or objects. They will not drink nor usually go close to water, that's why the old timers called rabies "Hydrofobie" (fear of water). There are videos on Youtube of people with rabies. These are not for children to see thus I will not share the links here.
I have also seen coons with distemper that went into a mad stage.
In my experience the nastiest animals with rabies are woodchucks. Even when staggering they will attempt to charge you on sight, it seems many more of them get into the mad stage. Skunks with rabies spray constantly, even if not in a mad stage. Oddly, I have never run into a rabid possem.

I didnt think coons had salivary glands?

This one was just standing there. Far from emaciated but not fat. Clear eyes. Fur was ugly and dirty. Not clean like most coons. Dull no sheen at all. Did not run off. Just stared at me in what I perceived to be aggression. Did not attempt to run away like a healthy animal would when I approached it.

Might be Parvo as well, goes through here every 5 years or so, last year had a coon drooling snarling and convulsing, tested positive for distemper

Staring to think some of the coons I’ve trapped have had some of these diseases. Most have been mad and a few have charged and grabbed my boots when I got too close.

I once ran into one on the edge of town in the middle of a hot, sunny afternoon. It was stumbling around like it was drunk. Based on what I saw on the internet for symptoms, I suspect it had distemper.
