Ok I didn't want to hijack Warrior's thread but here is an alternate situation. So 20 years ago I bought a house in a nice neighborhood. Most residents are older and yards are kept at an 8 out of 10. Even the younger generation is following along. I am not a yard nut by nature as that interferes with being a walleye nut in the spring.

So a few weeks ago, I notice this older guy walking along my property as I am leaving for work. He is hobbling along, looks somewhat feeble so I go and check on him. He introduces himself and turns out he is the son of the first guy that welcomed us to the neighborhood. We talk for a while and he starts telling me how his folks are both struggling with Alzheimer's, and he is taking care of them. A task made more difficult by him suffering a stroke 6 months back. He tells me he walks that route 6 times in the morning and again in evening as part of his stroke rehab. So by now I am late. So over this last weekend I start looking and I notice that 12 trips a day, he has pitched about a thousand cigarette butts on the street where they quickly blow into my property. Been thinking about my options because as much as I dislike yard work, I sure don't want to do more that he created for me, but confronting him doesn't seem like a great idea either with his health issues and stresses he is dealing with. Thoughts?

Put a bucket of sand or water out for him to put them in.

I like this idea.

It's always better to be a good neighbor and nice to old people.

I once had an instructor at night school lecture everyone standing out side the door , all the smokers needed a break in the middle of a 4 hour class so we took a 10 minute break , the instructor was also a smoker I never smoked but all the best stories were told outside on those breaks so I had a pop and listened.

he saw the hundreds of butts on the ground just feet to yards from the ash tray on top the garbage can near the door to the tech school

he no more than finishes the last drag with his lecture and you got it flicks the butt , then realizing what he had just done and the rant he had just gone on runs over to pick it up and put it in the ash tray.

some people are just going to be flickers , muscle memory but try the bucket.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

The bucket or an ashtray sounds good. I would politely ask that he refrain from pitching butts in my yard.

I'm a smoker but picking up butts is a pet peeve of mine having done many police calls in my time. I learned long ago to field strip and pocket the butt. My wife on the other hand won't flip one out the window on the road but will in the yard, drives me nuts.

The one thing I truly hated in the military was the am FOD walk on the flight line, picking up whatever and other peoples butts. Always dreamed of relighting them and jamming them up where the sun don't shine!

To me this is handling the issue w/o appearing disrespectful. Christians call it showing a little grace and it aint all bad

I chomped down on a filter in a salmon cake my mom made. Bones crunch but cigarette butts don't, lol. I guess canning boat factories don't have ash trays either.

But you said your mom made it. So isn’t it on her to make sure what is in what she feeds you?

Your mom doesn’t like you, does she?

Tell him if he dont quit throwing butts in your yard stroking out will be the least of his worries.

She was half blind and just missed it. The bible says to eat what is put before you, I guess I wasn't a good son or I would have just swallowed and asked no questions.

Around here folks put out trash cans or hang bags from a fence so the kids waiting for the bus won't throw trash on the ground.
