So I gotta say ever since I've started helping rehab animals and a few other things that involve me dealing with non outdoors folk I've found it more and more interesting the way people view outdoorsmen. Me and my girlfriend will get a call to go pick up a baby critter and usually it goes along the lines of use looking over the animal while the people who dropped it off go on about how nice it is we rehab animals. Some where along the lines the fact I'm a trapper comes up and I gets these deer in a head light look like " wait ! You kill animals ?! You hunt and fish and trap and all that but your here picking up a baby skunk to rehab?!" I usually just shrug and say yeah I do but I love animals show pictures of the grey fox possums and coons all my dogs and so on and agin they just kinda stare in confusion. By the end up it I've usually end up giving a lecture on why hunting trapping and fishing is important and how most of us care more about critters than most of the peta people.
It always seems to be like a big revelation to folks I guess that we can be like that. Was talking to one if her aunts today and showed her a picture of my grey fox sitting on my girls dad's shoulder and she said with as much as he kills fox and deer and coyotes and everything else would she ever think hed have a little gray fox loving all over him.
I don't know y'all I just find it odd and kinda fun to mess up peoples perceptions like that

I get regular referrals from Atlanta's largest rehab center. It all came from a sit down with their founder. I had lost a few HOA coyote trapping gigs due to him coming in behind me so I drove over walked into his office and shut the door behind me.
Come to find out he was a pragmatist and gladly accepted donations from hunting and fishing groups. I've never given them a dime but after that heart to heart we agreed to disagree on some things and work together on others.

Wolfdog,
I always find your posts interesting and a good read. One thing to keep in mind is that that the general public are not real intelligent and are easily influenced. Their opinion of things is usually not their own. Hunters, trappers, fisherman are the greatest financial contributors to the survival and well being of wild animals. The PETA types are usually city dwellers and do not know anything about the outdoor life.

You're making them think Wolfdog, and that is a good thing.

They have no clue how it works I’d ask them how much do they really spend on supporting wildlife every year to begin with then explain your costs, fees and the organizations you support and all they do for ALL wildlife over and over again.

Nothing to understand with peta. Just anti everything - except themselves.

So let's say you nurse some poor owl or racoon or something back to health. Do you release it next to my chicken coop; or someone elses' ?

Good question. Here in GA to release any wildlife you must have the written permission of the property owner where released and all public land is off limits.

If you could ever get your DNR to speak freely on rehabbers and rehabbing in general it would be eye opening.

Was waiting for that question. We got 30+ acres of woodland that's her private property then I have another 60+

I doubt one more owl, racoon or gray fox is going to ruin anything vs educating people on how to properly manage wildlife.
