.........any of you ever hunt either in Oklahoma? The regulations make it sound like getting a tag (or two) is pretty simple. There has to be a catch.....huge trespass fees? Very few critters to hunt?

What's the story?

J, best advice is to call ODWC and actually talk to someone who can answer your questions.

With the holiday I wouldn't call until Tuesday.

Sorry, I wasn't much help.

It's almost all private land, getting permission will be the trouble.

I have seen some big pronghorn bucks in the far west part of the panhandle.

Thanks for the info folks. I was just curious, I always went to the Uncompahgre Plateau in Colorado to elk hunt. It is pretty cut and dried....choose the OTC hunt you wanted, then go hunt public land free. The area we hunted was fairly tame, with not a lot of super steep spots . With all the Check Engine lights I've had come on in the last 5-6 years, I'm not sure, tame or not, that I can physically handle that area today(9000+ foot elev.). It would be rather enjoyable to hunt elk in the lower down country in western Ok., but I assume, because tags are so reasonably priced, that there must be a reason they don't have to have a lottery for them. If a guy can easily buy a tag OTC it really won't be a deal if he has to cough up 10 grand to get on a chunk of ground to fill it. Our Michigan elk tags are supper hard to draw, but the farms hate elk so much that it is usually not too hard to get a place to hunt. Even with a guide taking you out it is rare to pay more than a couple grand....guide and all.

Here in Ks because of terrain and type of cover, if they didn't limit rifle tags for those two species there wouldn't be any left to hunt for the most part. I would think if the tags are over the counter and not limited in Oklahoma that the population is pretty small. And knowing how most farmers view those two species that is probably how they want it.

small population of elk. Works the same as bear as soon as quota is met season is closed. So if your lucky season might last two days. lol

Small feral herd of elk here in one corner of the county. Several state records have been taken but always by someone connected to the wildlife department.

I say feral because they were turned loose by someone who bought them and then couldn't get a permit to have a played hunt ranch.

Ahhh. That explains things a good deal. Apparently the state really doesn't want them there. I know out this way the ag people mostly detest the Michigan herd. They can eat a pile of crops/hay. The forestry folks say they are destructive if too thick as well. It's only us hunters that want one behind every stump!
