Yearling rubber boa

Quill pig. Forty years ago in Idaho, they were extremely common. I've only seen a mere handful over the last ten years. What happened?

On porkys i think some of contributing factors is people shooting them to keep them denuding their conifier trees. Here in Wis, fishers like them and ive seen skins of porkys cleaned like someone fleshed them from fishers. Could be some disease also but unless you have someone studing them you wont know. Here in WIs we have University of Wisc students doing surveys and studys on then every year at Sandhill Santuary, Babcock Wi.
Just my two cents.

Thanks for starting this thread each week. I like the photos.
I see quite a few porkys in the desert riparian areas ( mud lake, market lake) but rarely see one in the forest.

I went fishing under this butte this week and it was so hot this beaver stopped and asked for some sun screen.

Thanks RdFx. Back in the 70s in Idaho, it was SOP to pick up a roadkill or two on just about every drive. One could always pay for gasoline and "road-cokes" (usually Ranier) by plucking guard hair and quills. Every porky was worth at least $10 if you spent the time to pluck 'em. On the other hand, any more, very rare to see a roadkill or a live one, in my neck of the woods anyway. Seems I still run across them periodically in desert riparian habitat; extremely rare in the mountains and heavy timber.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like we're seeing the same thing on the desert riparian areas.

Cool beaver shot with your rod tip in the photo. cool

Burrowing Owls nesting on the Prairie in a hole old Badger hole. Judging by the evidence left around the hole they appear to be feeding heavily on a nearby nesting colony of Black Terns.

I've always opined that I'll never again venture east of the Mississippi River, although that sure looks like an environment I could probably stand for a couple days...

Fantastic Anti-

Looks a bit like the Imnaha and Multnomah. Am I close on either?

How cool, Jack. Love that boa ...all tucked away under his coils.

I haven't seen a porky in this area at all, in the years I've been here. When I used to make trips up into BC, I saw huge ones , often scrambling across the roads .

Thank you for the share, everyone. A tour of the country !
