I plan to run a two week multi species line the two weeks prior to our 9 day gun season and that will be a canine line as well. I will run that for 2-4 hours in the AM and then do the water line until freeze up. I won't set out for coon the first 2 weeks or our WI season. If I follow my plan (which is not always easy to do) I would use up probably $15 worth of fuel a day so I would guess 2-300 dollars and not being a good canine trapper I won't have many yotes to help pay for the fuel.

The harvest is next to nothing, yet there is no interest in coon. Depressing really. They are the bread and butter of the vast majority of trappers in the U.S.
I will not trap coon again this year. I get paid to trap beaver. I’ll otter trap again while killing beaver. Catch whatever rats I can. Same as last year.
There’s other things to trap besides coon.

I am afraid the coyote market will go the way of the coon now that Canada Goose no longer uses fur. The Chinese will still buy and knock off their coyote trim but will never pay the same as CG did. I bet you will see a 10.00 average at best for MO coyotes this year. LLL

You may be right.
Unless your trapping live market coyotes, trying to make money dirt trapping doesn’t work here. Our coyote aren’t good enough as a whole. My son is ate up with coyote trapping. He culled the snot outa them last year and averaged $26 on the 40 that he skinned. He ditched that many more.
I my current situation, beaver are what I can make wages on. I charge by the day, and between the hide and castor and the otter it works.

If you are correct about Groenwald's buying the low priced fur from the auction houses and they corner the market even more we may never see a lot of competition in coon even when demand rises.

I’m gunna trap them this year. I will put them up and try to sell, if I don’t like the price offered I will gladly take them home. Then I’ll just tan them all and make a king size comforter, could be a fun project!

You can not run a land line here and not be a coon trapper. Or a water line with footholds for the most part. Might as well kill some.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Coon Trappers - How are you guys feeling ?

I'm feeling like someone kicked me right in the crotch ! Or someone pulled the 2 boys out from my shorts and started smacking them with a hammer !! That pretty much sums up my thoughts on coon prices.

I like to go after them in the dead of winter when I’m tired of running coyote line in the cold and the snow, just don’t go crazy setting for them, I read it should take about 160 or so pelts for the comforter, hard to catch that many once it gets cold. If I started as soon as the season opened I could get that in the first 2 weeks but they r all junk fur at that time, I’ll keep the incidentals from canine trapping and scoop up as many as I can this winter and hopefully have enough!

Yes, it is amazing how many of us are trying to keep coons out of sets, and yet the price is still pathetic. My theory is that if coon prices rise, it will be easy for folks to increase their coon catches thereby driving the price right back down.

Probably true. Lots of pent up supply.

Yep you live in the coon belt
Lots of places don't have near the numbers you do so trapping them to you might mean hundreds or thousands while in other areas it might mean 50 or 60

Still planning on a neighborhood line but looking at it differently as my rat trapping partner had 4 of his 37 at FHA sell for an average of $1.30. I stopped at two places last week and yes I can trap if I want to, but they said the last 3-4 years they just take care of them by themselves. With bunkers, bags, and free stalls, coon are a real issue but they have got things under control, at least around the farmstead. There were others trapping there several years ago but have not trapped for almost a decade.
