I am thinking about upping the game in my song dog control efforts and getting one of this electronic call thingamabobs. I have no idea about them and right now can't make an educated guess if they would even work where I am or how to use them. So where would a guy find out about these things ?? Or get sort of pointed in the right and cheap direction.

I don't know about Tennessee, but they work in Missouri. I would get one with a remote, you don't have to spend foxpro money, but they are nice calls. I actually had a foxpro that was around 100 bucks, it worked fine but only had like 16 sounds. I have a Primos Alpha Dog I've used for a couple years. They're fun to play with

I started out with handcalls and then got a Johnny Stewart cassette caller. Have had plenty of success with both. I now have a FoxPro and it's a pretty good caller. The thing I like about the E callers is I can set up the speaker away from my location and control with a remote. At certain times having the ability to sound like a challenging female coyote or some other coyote language can come in handy.

In summary I carry both and still use both. I'm glad I have the FoxPro. It was worth the money. Out here in the west I'm convinced that the main FoxPro sounds used have been heard too many times by coyotes and late season coyotes are hard to call in. I often turn to the handballs then.

With the thermal obsession sweeping the nation it aint just the west thats getting pounded. That reason is exactly why i switched to an icotech. Dont settle on an older used foxpro-theyre remotes are junk. Heard the new ones are good. Still the same sounds tho.

When I was still a kid my brothers and I used a "Call of the Wild". It was the hottest piece of new predator hunting equipment on the market! It was a 45 rpm record player powered by 12 D batteries. Heavy as original sin. I remember hiking about a mile back in one winter night with the caller on a sled through about a foot of snow.

I actually prefer using a mouth call. I have had a couple of Foxpros and still have one. Here in western Wisconsin we usually aren't calling terribly long distances due to the trees, brush and terrain. My go-to call is a turkey diaphragm. Very controllable and absolutely no movement when calling. I hate to admit it but I have called in more predators by making kissing sounds on the back of my hand than any other calls.

Seems like everyone has gone electronic these days. The main problem I had with them is being able to see the words on the display clearly. For a while I was carrying a pair of readers around my neck but that lost its thrill pretty quick. Back to the trusty diaphragms.

I'll be the devil's advocate here, none of the above mentioned calls will work worth a darn unless you kill the coyote or whatever you're trying to call in .
What I mean by that statement is don't miss the shot many people make a mistake or just flat out miss the target animal and educate it so it's harder to get to come in a second time .

Around here there's quite a few folks with E callers with about the same sound selections so the coyote is out mousing and didn't see you walk in and set up to start calling , within a few seconds that coyote hears the injured rabbit or woodpecker or what have you and it's heading out of the county as fast as it can .
Is the story I've heard time and again , which doesn't help the landowners in the neighborhood .

Just food for thought.
Allan

I remember being in a coyote calling contest near Tensleep, Wyoming and watching a coyote get up from its bed after calling with my Johnny Stewart Jackrabbit cassette and seeing it hightailing it out of that valley. Hadn't seen me, it was about 450 yards away...it was just the recording that spooked it. They call the heck out of them all year round in that country.

Ok so here is my situation. I have a power line running along the top of my property under which I keep the ground mowed with a brush hog, have oats planted in some places and a vegetable garden close to the boat. I have a clear sight from the boat slightly down hill for about 350 yards. I would set up the call at around 250 yards away in a low spot that I can oversee from the top of the hill. I don't care about fur damage as I won't be skinning them anyway, so I'll use my 223 WSSM A bolt that I can shoot hitting soda cans reliably out to 400 yards with 55 grain soft points. I have seen and caught a few on my food plot and now I have them on the trail camera down there in daylight hours when it used to be at night only. So my thought is, that if they are roaming around during daylight ( early mornings mostly ) I may be able to call them to the clear cut power line where I have them in sight and in range.
I have called foxes in with a tough call back in the UK but thats as far as my predator hunting knowledge goes. My guess is that it is next to useless in my current situation.

Get a $300 Foxpro with attached decoy directly from the fox-pro website. When you order direct they will download 100 sounds of your choice, which is way more than I’ll ever use. The decoy fur ball thing is a game changer too. Don’t forget about sounds for other species you may hunt in the future. I prefer just coyote vocals rather than the prey sounds. I also use mine for big game (legal in my state). Ive called in several bears, 2 lions and elk with it by placing it in front of me for predators and behind me when bow hunting elk. Other fun things to do with them are calling coons out of den trees during the day and coaxing badgers out of holes. I’ve tried to call bobcat and wolves on several occasions without any luck yet.

The biggest thing is the decoy to add some visual and focus predators away from you. The other thing I change sounds every five-ten minutes. The sound change triggers something to come in. I usually use the vocals of the target animal and then mix it up with prey sounds in between. If they’re hungry they’ll come into prey sounds. If they aren’t, they can’t resist checking out a coyote fight or coyote pup in distress.

So Mr Scuba. 350 yards down hill from your boat = underwater. Interesting, frogmen coyotes.......jk

My experience with calling makes me think that setup won't work real well. Normally I'd say the coyote well stay in the cover as long as he can. If your clear cut isn't really wide most will get to edge of trees and not seeing anything we'll not come out. And most that come to the decoy will be coming fast until they realize something is wrong then they will leave twice as fast. There are always a dum one or 3 that will just walk out and look around though. Especially if they haven't been called at all. Just my simple thoughts.

No I live on a 54 foot houseboat that I parked on top of a hill in east Tennessee. No water involved. Noah got away with it, so why shouldn't I
As in my post above I am proposing to use a rifle and not a speargun
I also drilled a couple of holes in my boat to let the water out

Here is a pic looking up towards the place where the boat is parked

I would in your situation get a FoxPro (I have the Fusion) and use rodent speaks at low volume and no visuals at all. In my experience you have about twice the chance of spooking coyotes as attracting them with visual aids.

I have a fox pro and do enjoy it -- however I have noticed that many of my urbanized coyotes have already heard the sounds and fin myself going back to the mouth calls frequently.

Maybe get an affordable electric caller and some mouth calls, give it all a good shot and see how it goes?
