Was selling a weight machine. Person contacts me by e-mail says I want it. Am buying for a third party and would like you to add twenty to the price to take it off the market. Send your mailing address and verify your price so we’re on the same page. Buyer will then send a certified check and after it clears send his moving people to pick up the machine. So I e-mail them the requested information, price, address, ph # and tell them I’ll tell any new inquiries the machine is sold pending funds.
Both the advertisement and e-mail stated $300. So yesterday there is a check in a USPS priority envelope made out to me for $1,996.00 from a incorporated farm in Maryland no memo on the check or note or nothing. What would you do?
Hmmm a moral delima ?.

Total scam
Bet they ask you to just cash the check and send the difference back.
Put it back up for sale.
That check is bogus

It’s a scam the idea is to get you to cash a check a be responsible for it because you are the one who cashed it. Really who sends you that much extra money if they don’t know you?

Total scam, take a picture of the check, send it to the proper authorities, these scams have been going on for years now, surprised more have not heard about them !

When ever anyone asks you to deposit more than what your asking for and they will then pick the purchase up afterwards, buyer beware !

You have fallen for a old scam, you still have time to save yourself, but don't deposit that check !!

Yep thats why they wanted you to verify your price so they can try to hold u accountable for the difference. You are about to get a "moral" lesson taught to u.

I go through about a dozen times every time I post a horse for sale. You would be surprised how many people from New York City will pay 5 figures for a horse sight unseen. Sometimes I play along for awhile fun of it.

Just asked the boss she's a bank manager and if they hear that story at her bank they won't even accept that check.

Tell them you turned that check into your Sheriffs office and they wanted to talk to you about it.

Doubt the authorities will do anything. B-I-L got clipped for about $ 60,000 on a cattle deal a few years. FBI told him if it ain't 250G they won't even pursue it. They did look up the account the feed bill got paid to and it was still active but they didn't do anything else. Just keep your scams under a 1/4 mill and u won't need to lose any sleep. Lol

O ye of little faith. Hath thou no faith in your fellow man? Haaaa.

Soon as I got into the house I searched the net for the corporate farm listed on the check as the maker, got their number and called them, they were closed but had voice mail for all the different depts.
Left them a message at accounts payable to call me Monday.
I believe it is a mismatch between my machine and someone else’s as there were several different adds for several other machines in that price range. Any way the price isn’t the same on the check as the asking price so nope ain’t happening.

Keep us posted. I'm betting they didn't send the check. My B-I-L deal, the scrammer copied his letter head and send a bogus feed bill to the owner of the cattle with their account # to transfer the $ to.

I'd cash the check and then charge them the difference for processing and handling.

It's not a valid check or money order. To add insult to injury, banks charge you for depositing a bad check or money order.

Law enforcement won't get involved. The best thing to do is just ignore the scammers.

I only take USPS money orders and PayPal when shipping and cash on pickup. Taking almost anything else will almost assure you get frequently scammed.

If the check is bogus, they sure went to a lot of trouble with a watermark and micro printing. Corp. logo ect.
Will be interesting to see what’s shaking.

It's a scam. If you want to have fun with them, tell them you cashed it. When they ask for the difference back, tell them no, you're gonna keep it, and take it from there. Just don't give them any real info. Make up a fake name (mike rotch, hugh Judik, or fondil mabut work well), give them the address of the local sheriff's office, etc etc.

It's not hard to do any of that "security" stuff anymore and the huge amounts of money they frequently scam makes it very worthwhile.

The world is full of gullible people ever since they took the word gullible out of the dictionary.

Want to have some fun with em. Tell them to come get the machine. When they show up take matters into your own hands for justice.

Complete scam. Tell them cash only and check the bills to make sure they didn't just print them.
