Thoughts on this video about trapping to protect native birds?

I set a dozen 220's and 160's for Coons and Possum last trapping season

I ended up getting a giant Possum and a small rabbit.

I trap them hard on my property to help the turkeys. Its a given that your best yote set will be plugged with a possum.

Don't know how old you are but when I was a kid we didn't have possums in Oregon. First one I ever saw was around 1967 or 68.

My dad remembers seeing his first coyote and first possum -- both when he was in hs. I remember seeing my last red fox when I was in hs. By the time I was in hs you couldn't go 15 miles down the road without seein a dead (or live) possum. and we don't need to talk about the coyote population.

No possums around here unless they hitch a ride on a hay truck. Caught my first coyote umpteen years ago when I was in high school in a dirthole set for fox. Didn't know if it was a wolf or a coyote at the time and had to call the warden to check it out. He knew what it was but had never seen one in person before either. Would have loved to have a picture of it but that was well before cell phones.

No possum here. I think our biggest threat to birds as far as furbearers go is skunks, and I do me best to get rid of those.

There’s a rumor that possums will go in groundhog holes and eat the young.

Can anybody confirm that?

Makes you wonder if we should be petitioning for Raccoon season to stay open till June 1 the last day of Turkey season

skunk and possum are already unprotected but you need an open season to

having almost no value in the fur market , they are just not getting trapped , having a late season could benefit the turkey population

I wouldn't be surprised as they eat just about anything

One of the guys in the video or Robert Waddell, who ought to be pretty well known on T-man for his 1,000 coyote quest. Looks to me like a promotional video for their ADC type trapping business targeted to landowners. i suspect lots of folks on here do the same?

As for the necessity of trapping.......we have a lot more nuisance varmints trapped around here by property owners.....around buildings. Same story......too many varmints, not enough food......so they get into all kinds of trouble and have to be dealt with.

Peeler is right about possum here. March 67 I started basic training. Never seen a possum in Oregon. Two months later after basic I was on leave and buddy showed me possum. He said they were every where.
That have been another thing that destroyed the good pheasant hunting we had. Pheasant in 70 were nonexistent in the Willamette Valley. Huge change from 66-67.

even turkeys can't eat ticks 365 , no ticks if the ground is hard as concrete frozen of course possums aren't eating them either both numbers are not well considered.

I'm west of Portland and I try to set a dozen or so land traps to get rid of them. Skunks can stay away lol 😆 😂
