This has been bugging me for some time and I can't seem to find the answer true answer - I can speculate like everyone else. I'm not interested in speculation. Before Covid I could buy King Crab for $24.99/ pound at SAMS club - last week they were $38/pound - I would only buy them once or twice a year as a special family treat. I thought with all the restaurants shut down there would have been less of a demand for them and a greater supply thereby creating an abnormal surplus and the result would be a lower price. that has not been the case. If anyone knows the real reason could you please let me know - this is an itch I can't seem to scratch
thanks

Red king crab is $35 a pound retail here in SE AK We caught a few and decided to hang it up,... one can get burned out on it. We give some to friends and neighbors. The boys sure love it! The reason your price is higher could be many factors. It's not just supply and demand but also who has the king crab and the catch from last opener may or may not have been great. I know locally the guys were having a hard time finding the 🦀. One friend said it was the poorest season he has seen. There is a herring bait shortage because BC herring fishermen couldn't catch enough of the desired size of bait herring. Inflation is at an all time high as mentioned above. Cost of anything is going up up and up thanks to certain leaders with no business tact. But chinese junk is still cheap and junky.

I get the inflation thing - which is a function of supply and demand ( short supply and increased demand or the same demand with less supply ) What Rosscoak says makes sense - the catch was there this year ( less supply) what didn't make sense to me in my thinking was that the demand wouldn't be there bc restaurants would be closed and not buying ( less demand) so why the price increase? sounds like the catch just wasn't there

I have found all I want to deal with, (personal use), but commercial areas are suffering. Am told by permit holders that dungies are next. Great prices, poor catches.
Just doing what I want now.

They are worth what they are worth. This season has not been wonderful in the area I fish. Hopefully the winter pots will fetch more.

That is amazing. Dungies usually shallow, and do NOT climb. I have caught a few blues, but not within 10 or more miles from Juneau. Different area, totally. Tanners are around, to be sure, but bitter-crab disease has taken a toll. The last several I got in king pots were milky.

We have Brown Crab, (Golden King Crab), around, as well, but you better like to coil line.

I just sent 8 pounds of legs to family down south. Fresh, then cooked, then frozen. Insulated box cost me $12.00. Fed-Ex Express was another $195.00. They arrived 24 hours LATE! So, I am now dealing with the B.S. involved with a refund. They aren't getting cheaper any time, soon.

^^^^^^ FedEx sucks. The last time I had something (an envelope) sent to me by FedEx it took one month from the east coast. The time before that was nearly as bad. I always double check to see if an online seller sends by FedEx; if they do I buy elsewhere. Any complaints to FedEx falls on deaf ears; it will be interesting to see how you make-out with them.

FedEX, being our only choice, can pretty much tell you “take it or leave it”. Last crab I caught were stuffed full of meat. And, they started off like that in the beginning of July. Normally they are nowhere near as full at the kickoff for our season.

And their delivery drivers are real special! Not sure where they find them, but I'm pretty sure they get a government subsidy for hiring mentally deficient people.
