This has been bugging me for some time and I can't seem to find the answer true answer - I can speculate like everyone else. I'm not interested in speculation. Before Covid I could buy King Crab for $24.99/ pound at SAMS club - last week they were $38/pound - I would only buy them once or twice a year as a special family treat. I thought with all the restaurants shut down there would have been less of a demand for them and a greater supply thereby creating an abnormal surplus and the result would be a lower price. that has not been the case. If anyone knows the real reason could you please let me know - this is an itch I can't seem to scratch

thanks

Because of Bidenflation, ALL food is priced much higher these days.

Red king crab is $35 a pound retail here in SE AK
We caught a few and decided to hang it up,... one can get burned out on it. We give some to friends and neighbors.
The boys sure love it!
The reason your price is higher could be many factors.
It's not just supply and demand but also who has the king crab and the catch from last opener may or may not have been great. I know locally the guys were having a hard time finding the 🦀. One friend said it was the poorest season he has seen.
There is a herring bait shortage because BC herring fishermen couldn't catch enough of the desired size of bait herring.
Inflation is at an all time high as mentioned above. Cost of anything is going up up and up thanks to certain leaders with no business tact. But chinese junk is still cheap and junky.

I get the inflation thing - which is a function of supply and demand ( short supply and increased demand or the same demand with less supply ) What Rosscoak says makes sense - the catch was there this year ( less supply) what didn't make sense to me in my thinking was that the demand wouldn't be there bc restaurants would be closed and not buying ( less demand) so why the price increase? sounds like the catch just wasn't there

I have found all I want to deal with, (personal use), but commercial areas are suffering.
Am told by permit holders that dungies are next. Great prices, poor catches.

Nice hair clip on the kiddo Jesse.

They are worth what they are worth. This season has not been wonderful in the area I fish. Hopefully the winter pots will fetch more.

I used to get 20 lb boxes out of Nome from NSSF much cheaper than anywhere else. I think it was like $19 lb the last time I ordered two years ago. I called last spring to order but they were waiting for the new price increase and would not sell any yet. I didn't call back. The Norton Sound crab is a bit smaller than the BB kings but good and sweet.

I think the Chinese and Japanese buy up most of the King crab in Alaska. Probably buy out Russia too.

Anyone from Nome know what the price is there now ?

I called Nome and they said they don't have King crab this year ?

I then checked Tenth and M Seafood in Anchorage and its $78.95 a lb ! And $75.lb at New Sagaya.

I better go set my own pots.

Great picture Jesse. Most king crab from alaska comes from the Bering Sea which has been in a long downward trend. Bristol Bay reds saw an almost 30% cut in the last season. Majority of king crab sold in the US comes from Russia, much supposedly caught illegally. High chance of it being labeled as “Alaskan “ because seafood mislabeling is rampant. Russia has put sanctions on our seafood and will not buy any, while we import tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars worth from them almost entirely tariff free

Off topic but do any of you guys in SE get any Blue king crab? Once dropped a sport pot off the side of the boat in the Auke Bay harbor and caught one of each king, bairdi and dungeness in one pull

That is amazing. Dungies usually shallow, and do NOT climb.
I have caught a few blues, but not within 10 or more miles from Juneau. Different area, totally.
Tanners are around, to be sure, but bitter-crab disease has taken a toll. The last several I got in king pots were milky.

We have Brown Crab, (Golden King Crab), around, as well, but you better like to coil line.

My sons bought me some for my birthday. $32 lb. at Costco. Some of the biggest and best legs I have ever had.

I just sent 8 pounds of legs to family down south. Fresh, then cooked, then frozen. Insulated box cost me $12.00. Fed-Ex Express was another $195.00.
They arrived 24 hours LATE!
So, I am now dealing with the B.S. involved with a refund.
They aren't getting cheaper any time, soon.

FedEx sucks. The last time I had something (an envelope) sent to me by FedEx it took one month from the east coast. The time before that was nearly as bad. I always double check to see if an online seller sends by FedEx; if they do I buy elsewhere.
Any complaints to FedEx falls on deaf ears; it will be interesting to see how you make-out with them.
