I picked some the other night from a relatives yard. I'm thinking about planting a few at the land. I did some research last night & learned bear love them. I don't think I want to lure in bear.

As for mowing over them, I imagine that could be a potentially hazardous projectile. They are bigger than I realized. You'd feel it if ya walked under a tree & had 1 fall on your head.

I also read that red fox like the prescense of black walnut trees.

Not sure if these deer were snacking on them though.

I have a ton of them. You can't mow over them as they'll just rot in the yard. Every year we pick them up systematically for weeks. Thousands of them (except last year because I think of the drought).

My opinion on these trees: 1.) Great trees as-trees themselves. 2.) IF I could find some real use for the walnuts they would make sense. Else, you either need to hire people or spend multiple weekends picking them up.

One trick we've done for years: Go to Salvation Army store, pick up cheap tennis rackets. Then use them to knock walnuts out into the woods, but you'll still need an army to pick them up in addition.

More cost effective and better distribution of desirable tree seeds than the other methods used. Low maintenance and about as Green as you can get with excellent results. That's cool

I get volunteer trees every year. I've never planted a walnut tree but I have dug up and moved a bunch of seedlings that were 8" tall all around the parent tree.

I don't have squirrels so apparently they will grow just sitting on the ground. Maybe the ones that come up are ones I've pushed into the ground with the lawn mower but that's the extent of "planting".

I've got black and english walnut trees. Not sure why anyone would plant black walnut. Too hard to get the meat out of the nuts.

Here's the nut cracker I use for black walnuts. The G. Gardner Master Nut Cracker. It works very well. I can literally crack a black walnut with a pinkie finger when using it.

Last year was a bad year for black walnuts here, but I still got a fair amount from around a dozen trees on my farm. 7 buckets of walnuts in hulls makes 2 buckets hulled and pressure washed.

Walnuts are just starting to drop here. I'll start collecting them soon. I plan on going after hickory nuts too. Anyone else collecting nuts this year
