I've gotten into an overwintered yellow jacket nest, once. Dug into a ditch bank the cavity was four foot in diameter and I counted eight foundresses in the debris I pulled out. And this was in June as it was next to a church that was needing it gone so they could have VBS.

Just from seeing the opening screen I can see they are the European introduced species which does overwinter as a colony and get massive the flowing years.
usually they just chew through the rafters and invade the house....so much for those snow birds that go to Florida and come back in April....surprize prize.
