HA, Jeff -

Good addition, sir. I used to bump into them periodically down in the upper Aniak and the Kisaralik. Interesting critter. Never did get a decent photo. I guess my photo array is just the Idaho lagomorphs I have around me now. I neglected the pygmy rabbit (mentioned above by caldwellite) and the pika (aka coni, rock-rabbit), rounding out the Idaho lagomorphs.

Jack

When I was an Idahoan I ate a pile of those Jacks......nearly all Blacktails. When I vamoosed back to Michigan I had 60+ lbs of boned Jackrabbit meat with me. I ground their meat and made sausage from them. I related on here in the past just how unbelievably thick they were in the winter of 81-82. The big ol' Whitetailed ones were nowhere near as common. I only ate a handfull of them. They were like giant Snowshoe Hares to this Upper Great Lakes bunny hunter.....I concidered them a trophy beast. I had one whopper's skin in the freezer for years. I planned to mount the darn thing as a dead mount like the one in Jeff's Arctic Hare photo. I ended up tossing it out. Still wish I'd have mounted it.

Was taught by a Scots man how to " taste test the bunny" before cooking.
As you make the opening by grabbing the back hair and the opening pelt cut- put your nose down and sniff.
Because of their re-cycling the water in their systems some have high nitrate concentrations and have off-odours you can smell = fox food not "hare pot dumpling material"

you can see in the urine spots in the snow the different colours from red to yellow
