Finnish dogs are also laikas, from a Siberian-centered point of view (they are called "karelo-finskaya laika" in Russian), and so are Norwegian elkhunds, and Yakutian hunting dogs.
An average West Siberian laika is about as big as a labrador retriever, but normally more compact and longer-legged. Males are usually significantly bigger than females. Because it is a working breed spared from excessive interest from the FCI, their phenotype remains pretty variable. The West Siberian laika as a breed was created in state-run Soviet kennels from hunting dogs used by the Khanty and Mansi people of the middle Ob basin, so many dogs in our village are non-pedigree and yet they are typical laikas.

Ugut, a village south of Surgut, in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug; originally from Novosibirsk Akademgorodok – and still spend a lot of time there smile

(the forum engine is confused by Cyrillics, but google helped me out)

Thanks to Mark Zagger for referring me to Frank and Sheila Sticka in Montana.. Got one the first time out and went back to get 2 more. Great Buddy Dogs and I love them on the line. The Stickas can't be beat.
