A few weeks ago I made a cloth mock up to test the pattern. They are based on a late 18th century breeches pattern, lengthened into pants. The front is a fall front, a flap instead of a modern fly. Finally got all the alterations made I needed to and started in on the leather. These are older deer hides, tanned by WB Place here in WI (now closed). When I get enough braintan, I I will make a replacement pair from that. Getting the pattern pieces all laid out and cut out. It took 3 hides, two big ones for the leg pieces and a normal one for the extra pieces. Sewing the waist band pieces together. The lining is a heavy cotton material. Sewing on the "fall" extensions and sewing the flap extension pieces together. More pics as I get more work done. It is all hand sewn.

Some more progress pics: Sewing on and top stitching the front extension piece. Sewing in the pockets and doing the top stitching. Joining the two front pieces together. Seam allowance is laid flat and topstiched in place (can't iron them like cloth)

Got a little more work done tonight. Had to do some work on the chicken coop to prep for winter. I got one side seam (outseam) mostly sewn. This seam includes the piece for the fringe. Here's the seam from the inside: Here's the leg folded right side out. I'm leaving the legs long and will trim them during the final fitting.

Thats awesome! Ive always wanted to randomly show up to trap with my trapping partner dressed head to tow in buck skin. I've run a few lines and done a bit of hunting dressed in period correct outfits, mainly late 18th century. I get some funny looks, some honest questions, even had one guy ask if I was Amish. Here's one of my best toms I shot with a flintlock fowler.

Amazing you have some skills. I did not realize that you were hand sewing it until I read someone elses post. Amazing.......jk

I bet you'll pick and choose the Cool days to wear those! Looking good though.
Brain tan will be on your Christmas list.
Braintan is on the to do list. I've got 2 ready to smoke and 3 more to break. Those are going to become a coat/jacket. Then I'll work on some for a pair of pants.

K Snow….what the heck is Bark Tanned ? I have some accoutrements that are Bark Tanned ,and that method is the best looking in my book .

Bark tanning is using the tannins in tree bark to do the tan in the hide. Yes, it is very different looking than brain tan. Most frontier settlements had bark tanning pits in them.
