I just got off the hill where I take care of a few acres of apple trees. As far as bear bait in a recent post has anyone thought about a gas can. I carry in a gallon of gas and if I leave the jug there the bears will destroy it over nite, every nite. What is your experience with bears and gas?.......jk

Interesting that you bring this up. One would think that the taste of petrochemicals would certainly be a turn-off for bears. In my experience, quite the opposite. In bush Alaska, I cached 5-gallon plastic or metal cans of aviation gas many places, as I was quite often needing the "little extra" to get back home. I found that simply cacheing them alongside a ridge-top or river bar landing site was an absolute waste of resources, as the bears (both black and grizzly) would bite into every can and drain them completely. Roping the cans up between two large trees was marginally better, but the blackies would still find a way to abscond with the fuel. Too, leaving a snowmachine at a remote trapping cabin for the summer was an invitation for trouble if any gasoline was left in the tank. Also. important to remove the seat of a snowmachine or it would be eaten by bears, if the porkies didn't get it first.

Maybe they roll in it for insect repellent. Hogs will eat soured corn tainted with diesel but coons and deer won't. Do you know if the pigs have a preference, corn with or without diesel?

Quite a few years ago a buddy got a new to him wooden corn feeder and soaked it with used crankcase oil and put corn in it just moments later we sat in the truck very tired from moving it around drinking bee r and 30 minutes later a few does came in and ate some corn right in front of us???? Go figure......Also pee does not scare them near as bad as poo which sends them away running......jk

I’ve placed urine drippers over scrapes and filled some with Code Blue and others with Code Me. I’ve seen no difference in reaction and have had instances where the ones I’ve filled directly from the tap do better in terms of sightings. As for pooh,…eh. I’ve had it scare some and not others. Hard to predict what an animal will do. In terms of bears, I think they’ll eat just about anything. They’re garbage cans. Whether they like it or it’s just a curiosity thing, who knows in some regards.
I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."
