I remember my first pass and review when I was in the Army, it happened in basic training, dang near brought tears to my eyes. I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

When we were in basic some guys were pv1 no rank all the way to e3 pfc. Jrtc, college, and other stuff could get you a boost in initial rank. So it could be new recruits at graduation level. I know i marched better as a private than i did as a crippled up e4 later on, lol. I am ignorant of the way the marines do things. I do know they like crayons.
