NYDEC just announced that there will be a new season for deer in a select few management areas that will run from Sept 11 through Sept 19. The quote below is from the September 10, 2021 NYDEC press release.....

"The new season begins Sept. 11, and runs through Sept. 19. Youth and senior hunters can take advantage of this new opportunity during warmer temperatures, which is uncommon during regular hunting seasons.

Hunters may only use Deer Management Permits (DMPs) and Deer Management Assistance Permit (DMAP) tags in this season. They may use firearms, crossbows, or vertical bows in WMUs 3M, 3R, 8A, 8F, 8G, 8J, 8N, 9A, and 9F, and only vertical bows in WMUs 1C, 3S, 4J, and 8C. "

NYSDEC 's deer management leaves an awful lot to be desired!

At least you have a few restrictions easier for you to check the mi./dnr website for all the seasons we have' used to have a min. age for the youth hunt now its up to the parent/guardian/mentor yes you can "borrow" a kid to get in on the youth hunt

Kids and old folks like to hunt too. Bet you will be surprised at the low harvest numbers. Totally disabled hunters should be included also, especially vets.

This new season is open to everyone who has management permits in the specific zones, The kids and old folks statement from NYDEC is simply PR fodder !!!! And Charles, I agree. Harvest numbers will be negligible.

Really not sure what they are thinking. I know that the 3M area deer herd was decimated last year with EHD. There were reports of dead deer all over the place and this year they open an extra season. Makes no sense.

Best thing they are doing is changing the hours so now instead of sunrise to sunset,,it will be half hour before to half hour after.
