Has anyone else had to deal with Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) within their deer herd? We have it now in Oswego County NY...

Had it off and on in SW Iowa since 2012…. It’s a terrible thing; seems to take out the older age class bucks first and takes years to recover from genetics wise

We deal with it in varying degrees every several years. 2 years ago we found 25 dead on about 900 aces. It usually kills the mature deer and leaves the young ones. It is brutal when it sets in heavy.

We are seeing what you guys are saying about mature deer, at least dying first...It's awful...

People are asked to report deer that they find:

3 years ago it hit my area. I found 4 dead on my farm smelled a few more I didn't look for. Many neighbors found 8 to 10 each on their places.

In just a few weeks I went from seeing 5 or 6 every evening to only seeing one in a week and half or so.

It what got me to take my boys to hunt deer out of state and back to unproductive crowded public land in Indiana.

Decimated our deer herds here over the last 15 years just got a notice from the GFP of more impacted counties and suspected outbreaks in other counties. Years ago a guy could get more tags then he wanted to fill, now good luck getting one. Archery tags were open to anyone as long as I can remember now the residents have restrictions and the season is closed to NR for the first time in all my years in SD.

Many bucks will be found dead in their velvet and often near water seen a lot of very nice dead ones over the years, when we get calls on deer walking in circles we know what’s going on. I had a mulie on my line a few years ago acting strange it would just stand there 30 yards away looking at me when I was checking cages. Seen it one place then again in the same place 2 days later standing between bales, weird.

GFP came out and shot it a few days later it was walking around aimlessly so I cut off the horns to turn in to them and put a brain sample in a ziplock bag for testing. I about had to headlock the guy to get him to send in the sample not what I expected to deal with, too much CSI TV maybe.

Just a guesstimate I’d say we lost maybe 80% of the deer numbers we had just 20 years ago

Suppose it could take one’s mind off the deer...

It does absolutely nothing to your genetics. The genetics that are in the surviving deer, the young bucks as you elude to, are the same genetics that were passed down from the older breeder bucks. The only thing you are losing out on is the older age class of bucks for a few years.....genetics are genetics regardless of age.

I hear all kinds of things like it hits then won’t infect the herd for a few years but that does not seem to be the case, the decline seems to have spanned the last 15 years with few upticks in the deer numbers.

The issue they say is in the dry years when the deer gather in wet areas then the gnats bite the velvet when it’s soft forming the horns infecting the bucks more then others.

I think what he is saying is if you had been letting good antlered young bucks go, those good antlered mature bucks are gone...

We have EHD here now and it has decimated our deer herd ...
I've never saw anything like this before , there are dead deer every where ..
The stench of rotting dear is strong .
Most every stream , pond or creek has or had dead deer rotting away ..

We are waiting on the first hard frost to kill the midge bugs that are transmitting this horrific disease

What a shame to see these deer die like this ...and with the antler restriction programs that where in force ,
We where just now starting to see some results with some very nice mature bucks ...

I'm 70 years old , been hunting and shooting deer for more than 50 years ..
I won't be able to hunt here locally this year , there's nothing left ..

Deal with it every few years and once in awhile blue tongue as well. I lose about 25 percent of the herd with EHD and lost 80 percent with the last blue tongue. Always takes the older deer. My genetics have changed a lot. Used to have wide spread with long brow tines now narrower and lots of mass. I guess the bucks with those genes survived. Whitetail on my place bounce back so fast.

Slow, I have a friend down in Dutchess County, and he is seeing just what you are describing...Ultimately, I believe DEC will need to reassess White-tail deer management in NY long before this newest white-tail deer management Plan is up...

Thankfully NO…not yet anyways. I did encounter a Zombie deer several years ago and dispatched her. Hoping it doesn’t come this far South.

I’ve seen badgers eat them but many are untouched by most scavengers here.

NJ is getting hammered with it in certain areas right now. Was helping giving the state trapping test this weekend, and the smell of death was everywhere. Carcasses laying around water areas, and black vultures everywhere in the trees. Not good.
