Along with hunting seasons, one of the other rites of autumn that I've always enjoyed has been the annual quest for firewood to heat the house throughout the winter. Another couple weeks and the red foxes will be prime enough to start trapping, and the woodshed's gotta be full before that starts.

Miss Lisa frequently picks up a blue grouse or two while making a woodload.

Bucking and splitting, I'm always assisted by the dogs.

An overflowing woodshed is a thing of beauty in my opinion.

Some of our random family trip pics. Anyone recognize these??? We have trappers on here from all over so I'm sure there will be some smiles. Love touring US and seeing different things.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

First one Chimney Rock near Scottsbluff, NE (sort of)?
I never saw the rattle snake signs out there as I recall.
Saw snakes, just not the signs.

Blessings,
Mark

Gulo I think your wood shed is looking at me. Cool
My wife would not get out of the truck by the snake sign. I don’t tell her there are snakes around when we go places like that.

I love chasing these bombers around. Only get one a year these days.

Range -

Didn't know if anyone would notice the great horned owl eye's in the stacked wood.

Really nice picture! Interesting that I've been jumping a brace of sage hens on every woodload at a bit over 9000' elevation. Is it common for them to be up on the tops in autumn?

Mark, yes, chimney rock near Scottsbluff.
I'm fortunate enough to get out there several times a year. Its about a 6 hour drive from my front door. My son is a pitcher at WNCC there. Great scenery out there. Go Cougars!

All these firewood Fotos give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Gathering firewood on public land is/was one of my most enjoyable endeavors. Two-tracking my way around the county with a thermos of coffee and my wood making tools is not only a great way to get exercise, it is also extremely satisfying. Nothing like gazing at a bursting woodpile and knowing you have ample Strategic Firewood Reserves!

Gulo, is that enough wood for the cold season? Estimate how many days a year the stove is going? How far is the shed from the house? Guess you can't make a raft upriver and float it down, eh?

We heat 100% with wood. House is 1700 sq. ft. We burn an average of 210 days of the year, but the coldest I've ever seen it was -40F. The woodshed is 80' from the house. When White17 built this house, he built it super-insulated and anally tight. We go through between 4 and 5 cords of wood. Alas, no more rafting logs downstream to the doorstep.

Yes. It is lodgepole pine. In the mountains here in the northwest, we basically have no hardwoods. Standing dead lodgepole has pretty good BTUs, very little ash content, and its thin bark is not a winter hideaway for millions of spiders. Another plus for an old man like me is that it splits easy with a maul.

Jack
