I planted our first 3 apple trees a couple years ago when we bought the house. The Kidd's orange red produced two apples this year. I love fall.

Question about deer and apples. Years ago my son cut grass for two people who had apple trees. He had to pick up apples before he mowed. We took the apples to a farm and baited deer. The apples from one tree were like cocaine to the deer, and the other tree's apples rotted before the deer would even touch them.

What varieties do deer prefer?

Nice k snow.

Charles, I have seen that too. I once put out a mix of red & green apples and the deer left the green ones.

For us here. They prefer the sweeter apples and smaller. They will eat dry dead field grass before they will touch the Granny’s and Gravensteins both get pretty big and are tart gill busters. Even then it will be the Gravensteins before the Granny’s. They will really get after the yellow transparents. I started watching this a couple years ago with local deer. They have definite preferred trees and fruit, if there’s a pear ripe within 1/2 mile they will skip every apple on the way to the pear tree.

Interesting. When I was a kid we would pick up the wormy apples from my grandmother's trees and take them down to the deer. They were all granny smith. The deer would definitely eat them, but they were the only apples they had.... they didn't have a choice.

Interesting about the deer. I have fences around my trees to keep the deer from turning them into bushes.

Bears are a problem around here. They can knock a surprisingly large tree over.
