It's a secret. I don't want anyone coming and knocking on my door asking for my stuff when SHTF..

Yup. My neighbors will put barricades at the end of the street and we will be fine. The small group will be fine as we have worked together to ensure our small group is self sufficient…

Or maybe we aren’t. I wouldn’t even bother turning down the lane. We will have it barricaded anyway.

You might start saving up on dry goods if the power gets cut those freezers become useless in short time.

Yeah, 3-4 freezers worth would make for some LONG days canning all that up.

Thats what Im saying too. I love a freezer full of deer, elk, bear, antelope, fowl and more, but its all for not if the power goes. That is the real threat IMO. Supply chain might slip, but most have or should have good dry bulk. The freezers present another problem, and one i'd like to plan for.

Learn to can. It's easy, and the meat and veggies you can last forever. All you need is a pressure canner and some jars. I intend to put at least 3 deer in jars this year. The loins will be cut into steaks and put in the freezer, but it'll be an easy enough matter to can them up if the power goes out. Make sure to have plenty of jars and lids on hand too though.

Generators are nice, but they only work for as long as the gas holds out. Which probably won't be long in a true emergency.

Us Northern folks are blessed/cursed because meat can sit outside all winter and stay frozen.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Takes about 750 lbs of dry grain per adult male per year. We put in a new wood stove when we bought this home. It saved us a couple of times. Never went below 69 degrees when it was
10 degrees above and a bad wind ( big trees went down for miles and took the power out). Save garden seeds , I keep them in the frig.. Cage traps keep game alive and fresh even in
the summer..Every one will be trapping, fishing and hunting and reducing the available game..No power means no freezing or canning food. Fresh water, I located two flowing wells in my area. I also purchased a water purification filter. A number of shelf units allows you to rotate your supplies as you us them on a daily basis. Colony traps make a good fish trap. On and on and on.....

I beg to differ. Canning, even pressure canning, can most certainly be done over an open fire.

Gramma canned everything on a wood fueled kitchen stove.

I usually don't raise meat chickens because as you said it is generally cheaper to buy it. It was talk of a steep increase in chicken prices that prompted me to this year. I eat legs and thighs, but I much prefer breast meat. I got my broilers for $1.30 a chick, free shipping = $32.50. Figure 300 lbs of feed @ $15/40lb bag comes to $112.50. Comes to $145 which is $5.80 a bird. Not terribly cheap, but not terrible either.

Those will be much better tasting birds too.

About the only things I have extra is I went ahead and bought the meats and fixings for Thanksgiving and Christmas so I'm not stuck serving bologna for them,,, not that there's anything wrong with bologna if you're into that sort of thing. We just prefer turkey and ham for those occasions.

If I use it, and it doesn't require power to store it, and it will be in demand, I stock up.

I see no need to itemize here, but food, water, grains, ammo, alcohol are on the list.
