I disagree with that unless you are in bad shape at 60.
Some guys in their 80's put up decent amounts of fur.
Old Paul Millette was still trapping in the range of 150 beaver 50 otter and 200 marten when he was near 80.All in winter and all put up.
A lot less than when he was 60 but still a good bit of fur.
I know a few others that didnt really retire from commercial fur trapping until they were in or near their 80's,and many that did slow down at that age took on helpers or signed on as 02's with the person they sold their lines to,and stayed in the game..

Yep, agree with Swamp Wolf and Beav, doubt well ever see good fur prices again.

HOPE IM WRONG, but with how touchy-feely the world is getting I doubt it.

I dont see that here, fur has been moving as good or better than last year.Almost all going to regular repeat customers.Hadnt been able to recruit new customers last summer because of the covid restrictions but the wife lined up some intrest on her facebook.Have to watch the facebook thing or demand will outstrip my supply quickly.Mostly sold out now, with quite a few calls coming in checking to see if this years supply has come in from the tannery yet.New batch supposed to be in before Christmas..

Yep, and I'm using that as a basis. Fur has been down since then other than the small spike about 5 years ago that only ran for a couple years.

Pretty much waited 30 years for a couple good years and if that holds true again, ill be in my mid 90's if I last that long.
But like I said above, its a different world today.

Mid to late 80's fur prices were good.Had over 100 dollar avg around '85 for marten Bottom dropped out around 1990.Got good again especially otter in the mid 2000's Marten was decent for a long stretch, beaver was reasonable also for quite a while.
I can see marten and otter coming back with the demise of ranch fur.
Will have a better handle on the direction after the march sale if all the international buyers can come and bid.

GFW (Gary) has a video on Facebook today explaining the Postponement announcement yesterday. I just looked and I do not see it on You Tube or the GFW website yet and I know lots of trappers are not on Facebook. Not sure if this will play if you are not on Facebook but here is the link:

GFW Live Video 11/9/21

I think this might work for everyone. I signed out of FB and the video still play for me but I did have to turn the audio on.

Something is going on in China that is not being publicized, bonds, currency , and the china flu that is shutting down parts of the country. The premier has not left the country in months, our fur market reflects that uncertainty. Iam still trapping, feeding lions and bobcats lots of beaver fur and all!

It's a good time to be a trapper!

Tom

Seems the word is "Uncertainty". Pretty good reason not to trap, especially since prices sucked before the "Uncertainty" smile

I know there is no coon market but was suggesting that the actions taken will keep the low harvest even lower. I am sure fur buyers are getting tired of buying "junk stock" hoping for the turnaround. Coon is a utility fur and numbers is the game so if the market does not pick up coons may be a fur of the past at least for the near term future.

Then don’t trap Dirt. It’s just like the vaccine. Personal choice.

I just called them to ask if I could still ship my fur to them and they said fine. Had a brief conversation about why. He said that the gas prices prevents buying fur early since most fur ain't fully prime. They will accept fur caught now either in person at their facility or shipped to them stretched and dried. They may not start buying until January. For my area in NE Wisconsin....Prime Muskrats. Sharpen up the ice chisel.
