I disagree with that unless you are in bad shape at 60.
Some guys in their 80's put up decent amounts of fur.
Old Paul Millette was still trapping in the range of 150 beaver 50 otter and 200 marten when he was near 80.All in winter and all put up.
A lot less than when he was 60 but still a good bit of fur.
I know a few others that didnt really retire from commercial fur trapping until they were in or near their 80's,and many that did slow down at that age took on helpers or signed on as 02's with the person they sold their lines to,and stayed in the game..[/quote]

Fancy that. The contrary turd disagrees.

You’d disagree if someone told you the sky was blue.

Well Unlike you I did back up my statement with factual examples.

A typical dried and scrapped blanket beav weighs what, about 2 pounds or a little over...?

Depends how much stuff you can leave on it without causing too much hairslip.

Ok, Mr. Exactness, give me a ball park range, at least 2 pounds but less 4 or something like that. Your like some people in my field that give percentages down to 2 or 3 points right of the decimal when anyone looking at the standard error of the estimate should roll their eyes at that exactness. Just because Excel can give that (or greater) precision doesn't make it mean anything,,,

I sold some junk beaver to a buyer that paid me $7.00 a pound. He never looked at them, just weighed them. All sizes. Ended up with like$11.60 something average. Clean scraped, should've left some junk on them.

Not an exact science-you have to rot a few to find the magic formulae.
HINT-If you freeze dry them you can leave a lot more maybe even a few bones.

Dirt's update:

Brown mink didn't change much from last June at the Saga Auction the last 2 days from comparing the catalogs Actually, maybe down a little. frown

Farmed russian sable prices have improved over last June from what I can tell from the catalogs.

One more farmed russian sable sale today. Fingers crossed!

SLT former VSL are shearable, but they will be sold for hatter prices. Even the perfect beaver unless it is dark will be sold for under 50 cents an inch. Get you some of that! crazy

Boco is the one that gives people unrealistic expectations, not me.

Have to call you on this one Dirt. VSL grade for beavers were often referred to as the invisible slight, VSL included any priming spots, or a bruise on the leather side, any visible small conibear or snare marks, tiny holes almost anywhere on the skin, any tiny defect at all. This grade has now been incorporated into the selects and are not sold as hatters.

GD SLTS today are not going to sell as shearing beaver, shipping and processing will be $50+ USD plus $20 to dye them if that the chosen method, and some GD SLTS tear in the dress or otherwise have problems. Meaning the Grade is not as tight as it used to be (blue and or slatey leather in the "selects", and how many trappers catch beavers between mid December and Mid March in the north? If we had the production of beaver we had years ago and big numbers to work with so the graders could be more precise and make reasonable sized, well sectioned and graded lots, maybe some bigger maker would begin using and carrying them in a line once more. Back to the chicken or the egg again. Selects used to require a totally white leather skin free of defects to fall into that category.

That's what happens when all your eggs are in one basket. How many of the country buyers buy and sell to GFW?

Whats a country buyer?

I mean “country buyer” sounds like a category or large group.
