According to Robert Barnes who was volunteering on the defense team to do pretrial polling and jury screening his polls showed the pretrial publicity had resulted in 2/3 of Kenosha residents having already formed an opinion of Kyle's guilt. With 1/3 solidly convinced of his guilt.
The lead defense attorney declined to use this data or submit it to the judge and instead picked a jury rather quickly. That's why Barnes' team left.
Even with the collapse of the prosecution and strength of the defense I can see a jury coming in with preconceived ideas struggling to deliberate.
