Do any of you grow voodoo lilies or know anything about them? I've only vaguely heard about voodoo lilies in the past and seen a few in fancy gardens. I saw some for sale, relatively locally and I am purchasing the tubers tomorrow. I am going to give my mother some Amorphophallus konjac tubers for Christmas this year. The biggest of the tubers are 10 inches across and they produce a 5 or 6 foot, purple flower spike, that produces heat and smells like dead meat. The flower is pollinated by carrion flies. The leaf gets 4 foot long. Asian people eat the bulbs and consider them medicinal. In the US, the tubers are pretty pricey to eat. The tubers can weigh up to 50 pounds. Here's what the tubers look like. Keith Which one are you,the guy with the dirty jeans or the guy with the glasses?

I really can't imagine wanting a flower in my yard that smells like rotting flesh. Sounds like a plant for the Morgue or Graveyard.
God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

I complain about digging gladiolus and dahlia bulbs every fall. Those would do me in. I've got all my Amorphophallus in pots, but you can leave them in the ground in zone 6. Last year, I just put all of mine in the mud room for the Winter. I'm thinking about lining my driveway with them in the ground, when I get a lot of large ones. I just ordered 5 more species of Amorphophallus, including Amorphophallus henryi, which is supposed to be the worst smelling species. Not all of the 270 plus species smell bad. They all have interesting looking leaves and inflorescences. Keith

The beauty and stench of death is coming. My 5 largest Amorphophallus konjac korms are starting to send up flower shoots. I think some of my younger korms may bloom too. Raw rabbit manure and composted poultry and pigeon manure made the korms grow much faster than most gardeners usually experience. I think the blooms will be 4' to a little over 5' tall this year. The 4 largest korms are a little over 6" diameter. The smallest korm is over 5" inches. It's several years older than the smaller ones. It bloomed the last 2 years. It got put in a worse location and didn't get watered much. The small korms were thumbnail sized, when I purchased them a little over 2 years years ago. I have close to 1000 konjacs now, from all the offshoots. Keith

I just walked into my bedroom and it smelled odd, not unpleasant, but odd. I looked over and one of the konjac blooms is mostly open. I quickly took it out. It was completely closed at most one hour before. I suspect the smell will be bad soon. Fortunately it's warm enough to put it outside this week. I'll take some better pictures tomorrow in daylight. 3 others are just foot long shoots so far. Another has hardly started the flower spike at all. I have 1 more in the garage that may go. I was hoping they would go at the same time so they would fruit and produce seeds. Keith

Later in March, I ended up having 3 konjacs have overlapping blooms. I rubbed the insides hard with a feather, several times a day, for a few days and got one to fruit. The fruits are starting to ripen. I don't know if the fruits are edible or not. I don't know how many seeds are in each fruit either. I don't know how to germinate the seeds either. Very, very few people ever get them to fruit. I posted on an Amorphophallus forum and I am hoping someone has some answers. So far people on the forum are excited, but clueless on the answers. Keith
