I met a crabber who works on the Chesapeake Bay who goes back and forth putting bizarre items in the competitors crab pots.
The final straw, so it seemed, was his competitor put a road kill skunk in one of his pots. When they pulled that pot, it could hardly hold one more crab in it. He said that went on in that particular pot long after the skunk was taken out of it. I guess the essence remained and kept on giving.

Possums, muskrats, and beaver work well as crab bait also!

Crabs are Very low on the food chain. They will eat anything that doesn’t eat them first. Animal protein of any kind is definitely on their menu.

Yup. Don’t trim any fat and they seem to work better. Also seem better in the ocean as opposed to the bays, but that’s also where I crab the most. The medium sized green/gray bait bags will hold an average size Oregon coon cut in half and stuffed in.

I heard a story about this guy who always complained about the bait he bought. One day some fellow crabbers stuffed the last pot in his string with some of their crabs and put a black baby doll in the bait well. They did this for a week, always stuffing that pot on the end of his string. The owner was searching everywhere for similar baby dolls.

If you
Are going to use this
for bait, cut the glands out .
You will smell and taste it…. Pucking…..

I use to use anise oil and quit for the same reason

When I worked in the lobster fishery we'd occasionally set a pot or two each season that had caught a critter when stored on land. They caught. Its free bait, I say don't let it go to waste.
