One that plugs into the wall, don't fool with any others...unless there's no electricity, obviously.

I have not had a problem with my speed right. Its what was recomended by Joel Salitan. He said if you are going to spend money on anything spend it on a good fence charger.
It's only 2 jouls and im running it off a battery for my net goat fence. If i can ever afford to get the place fenced with new fence I will get a larger speed right and plug it in with a battery back up.

Depends what you’re doing with it. No need for a 60 joule charger on a half acre lot. Depends on what environmental conditions and critter you are trying to contain or repel Dry conditions require more energy Like others have said, a good ground system is the foundation of a good electric fence I have Gallagher chargers, not sure if they are still top of the list but when I was running them they were. Even if you are buying some other brand, Gallagher has some good information on their website about building electric fences. Wire spacing, grounding, etc

Cyclops brand are amazing.I run 1 plug in and 2 battery 5 joule and they have out performed the zarebas that i had previously by a long ways. They make a 32 joule that would easily do 450 acres. I run a 6 joule Zareba on my High tensile side, on the other side of my property it's lighter wire so I'm using an older 1Joule box that is turned off in winter. 3 lightning ground rods near each box and A lightning diverted & 3 more lightning ground rods on the OFF side corners of each field. The increase in ground rods & $15 diverters have allowed me to only replace 1 6 joule box in 23 years.

having touched several
the solar ones have only tingled for me I regularly just grab the wire with my gloved hand only get a little tickle I suspect it has more to do with inadequate grounding than the unit really being that under powered
like others have said how they are installed is very important
I have a small up to 15 mile it will light you up and seriously get your attention
the farm has a very nice setup but runs a lot of miles of fence and the biggest issue is ground and drain I touch the fence often enough and it really doesn't do all that much most of the time
my fence is chain link with a hot wire at the top , hot wire to the earth gets your attention with bare feet , it isn't bad with dry insulating shoes on still more than a tickle , but if you get any part of the chain link fence which I have all tied to ground and the ground wire of the charger connected too and the hot wire at the same time you get the full experience, that will hold 10,000% of your attention till you can get free.
the farm has miles and miles of wire around 250 acre in pasture fenced while they have a really nice charger , they don't often cut the grass around the fence till it becomes an issue , since early in the spring the new cattle learn to respect the wire it isn't much of an issue once the grass grows tall
all that little loss here little loss there adds up and racoons no longer respect the electro netting
when running wire make sure to run a ground then tie that ground to ground rods about every hundred feet it makes for less loss hot wire to earth ground
stagger wires so if anything tried to push through the fence it will have a ground and a hot and get the full effect
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When our Red Snapp'r s in the big metal box finally died, we have gone through a few of the newer types. We have 2 15 mile chargers. Once we tried Gallagher, they seem to last and do a good job too.

One with good grounding rods THIS all day every day. A deep ground with good connections is what makes the whole system work like it should. One of the neighbors we leased pasture from when I was a kid would drive his grounding rod in by a big water tank and wet it down every morning as part of his chores.
I only got into his hot wire one time and it made a believer out of me. Picture a blue flame 2.5 to 3 inches that would pop louder than a 2w CB shot
