Hello all,

A few weeks back I picked up 5 conibear 110's and a 330 at a garage sale. I've been wanting to try trapping for a few years, and now seemed like a good time to start. Last weekend I was picking up some deer hunting supplies and couldn't resist getting a couple Duke #1 1/2's too.

I found an area that seemed to have muskrats, so I set up the 110's. On the second check - no muskrats, but I did see a 50lb+ beaver and ended up adding the 330 to the line, a few days later I set up some basic drowning sets with the footholds.

Long story long, no fur yet. However, I did get a wring off of 3 beaver toes in one of the Duke footholds this morning. Looking around, I'm realizing that specific trap may be too small for beaver. Are the 1 1/2's suitable for beaver? Should I just get a couple larger sets?

Thanks!

1 1/2 foothold are way too small for beaver! Use your 330 for beaver.

The 1 1/2 is too small for beaver, like BR said. They work great for muskrats though. Be sure to stake real well in case a beaver or coon gets to the set b4 the muskrat.

I am new to trapping too. My main thing is going to coons and rats. Here in jersey we are limited to snares and DPs for coon. Before I start asking questions I am going to take our trappers Ed course and cable restraint course this spring. I can already tell you I am going to be making and using cable restraints. However, all the snare videos I have seen involve having the coons walk into them while going somewhere else. When I tried trapping coon as a kid with Victor double coilsprings I made a set and used bait. Do people make baited sets for coons using snares?

I just got started too, Im from the Jefferson area, where abouts are you? Ive been targeting rats and mink yet with no success on 5 checks. Starting a new line today. Cabelas has some bridger no 5s that are perfect for beaver to rig a drowning set. 1 1/2s are perfect for rats and mink. Try making some "rat pole sets" just a smooth 3/8 fiberglass stake with a carrot and 1.5 attahced in various ways if you youtube it randy newburg has good videos of it. Cabelas has haagz brackets for that too but you can also make a bracket eith pvc tube. I had two misses on bottom edge 110 sets baited with carrots. Peppermint and anise are supposed to be good skrat attractors.

I use #5's on my beaver line- I've also caught a lot of beaver on #3's targeting a front foot catch.

For coons, snares are best used in trails. There is a learning curve to snaring, but you can set those DPs in those trails and easily catch coons. Just bait it and set right in the middle of the trail where a coon will have to trip over it!

Just a suggestion: Check out the suppliers that support T-Man, or any of the other supply houses, before going to Cabelas.

Newt Sterling has several books and videos out for snaring. He is from New Jersey and a member here. He makes and sells snares along with all the hardware one will need. Snare One

I'm in Tennessee now, but I grew up in southern Wisconsin. Went to school at UWW so I used to drive through Jefferson all the time. Come to think of it - I wish I would have been trapping back then because the habitat is perfect.

I don’t recommend buying from cabellas, they mark up things. I recommend F&T post as well as Minnesota Trappline, but better yet, buy from “the trap shed” on this website itself. Fleming traps is pricey but depending on what you’re looking for they have better deals on a few things.
